Insurance and Hit and Run Drivers

I’m Ed Smith, an Auburn auto accident attorney. Uninsured or hit and run drivers cause havoc on our roadways. Many times during the years of my Sacramento personal injury practice, I have encountered people who were struck by or whose family was struck by a hit and run driver.

I’m Ed Smith. I am a South Sacramento Pedestrian Accident Lawyer.  On Saturday, December 19, 2015, a 17-year-old girl was struck by a South Sacramento hit and run driver at the intersection of Fruitridge Road and Vista Avenue. The light had just indicated it was her turn to walk when she was hit by what looked to be a 2002 or 2003 Toyota Solara. The car was headed east on Fruitridge Road. It failed to stop for a red light. The dark colored vehicle (possibly blue) hit the girl sending her up into the air and then landing back onto the street.

The Importance of Financial Responsibility: Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists

Whether you just purchased a new car, switched insurance providers, or are wondering where to start on your coverage research, it is important to note the following:

Rancho Cordova Fatal Crash
Capital City Freeway Car Crash Injures Four

On Thursday, September 24, 2015 at approximately 7:30 p.m., a car being driven on the Capital City Freeway at El Camino Avenue struck an on-ramp metering light.  Three of the four occupants in the car were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle by the fire department.  He suffered major injuries as a result of the crash.

The California Highway Patrol reported the northbound freeway off-ramp at El Camino was closed to traffic while emergency personnel worked to clear the accident scene.

Recently a man was killed in Natomas after sustaining fatal injuries from a hit and run collision while he was on a bicycle.  This incident occurred on W. El Camino Avenue on the overpass of Interstate 5. It was in the early morning hours when the victim was discovered by a security guard and was pronounced dead at the scene.  There was no information as to the other party involved.

Unfortunately tragedies involving hit and run accidents occur quite  often and with no information available for the responsible parties people often question if this type of collision would be covered through insurance. The answer is yes, hit and run injuries are covered by auto insurance through the uninsured motorist portion of the policy.

UM (Uninsured Motorist) insurance is most always available in Hit and Run Accidents.

Sometimes there are actually advantages of lower insurance third party limits!

One of the most important factors in every injury claim, is that there is enough insurance to pay for all damages. One of the ways for people to ensure that they have enough insurance to pay for any injuries, wage loss or future damages they may suffer in an accident is to buy their own uninsured or under-insured motorist coverage.

Uninsured Motorist coverage protects the injured party if the at fault party did not have insurance.

One of the saddest circumstances I deal with frequently is interviewing a new potential client who has been severely injured thru the clear negligence of another driver, and then informing the potential client that he doesn’t need a lawyer, because the other insurance limits are so low..he can likely obtain them by himself.

When people buy auto insurance they  rely on their insurance broker to protect them. Unfortunately, many brokers fail to adequately explain each of the coverages they sell. If their client is

cost conscious they suggest that the client can save a few dollars by waiving uninsured or underinsured  motorist coverage. This is always a big mistake.
