Fatal Crash in Natomas

On Tuesday, August 18th there was a police pursuit that ended in one fatality. Prior to the event, police and an air unit were called to investigate reports of a shooting in the 2600 block of Stonecreek Drive in Natomas, CA where a man was reported to have fired off shots from a rifle while in a dispute with neighbors. It was also reported that the suspect fled the scene by a vehicle that was driven by a female driver.

In a previous blog, I wrote about dysphagia.  Dysphagia is a complication that occurs in some people after a cervical spine surgery.

In a nutshell, dysphagia is a condition where a person has difficulty swallowing.  My previous blog discussed  what dysphagia symptoms include as well as some of the reasons why cervical spinal surgery causes dysphagia.  It should be noted that dysphagia is not a complication that occurs in all people who have cervical spine surgery.  However, certain groups of people have a greater risk for this complication.

Wrong Way Accidents on Freeways Claim Lives

Recent wrong way collisions on freeways in the Sacramento area have had catastrophic consequences.  Specifically, in May of this year, the driver of a pickup truck was traveling eastbound in the fast lane of westbound I-80 when he struck and the occupants of a Lexus as well as himself.  Also, a month earlier in April, a 19-year-old traveling the wrong way on a freeway crashed into a pickup truck carrying three men, resulting in her death.  She had a blood alcohol level of .20 percent, over twice the legal limit.  In another alcohol-related wrong way collision earlier this year, the driver of a sedan drunkenly sped onto a freeway the wrong way and crashed into a car carrying three teenagers, killing all of them.

A terrible fatal car crash happened in Georgetown, California this week involving a pickup truck, DUI and a rollover.  The husband of the deceased victim was booked into the El Dorado County Jail on several charges, which included DUI with bodily injury, child endangerment and vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated.

Terrible facts, and the husband will pay for this incident forever.  Obviously, there is driver negligence in this case, but it always is worth looking at the crashworthiness of the involved vehicle.  The deceased wife and mother in this incident was likely killed due to her position in the vehicle coupled with the area of the rollover.  Could faulty design be partly at play in this instance?  The husband, and the two children (ages 14 and 3) walked away without injury.

Facial Fractures

The face is made from several different bones, many of which are fused together. There are two joints to the face on either side of the cheeks, called the temporomandibular joints. Facial fractures can be minor or severe, depending on their location and whether or not they are displaced. Open fractures are more serious than closed fractures because open areas of bone are prone to bone infections, which are difficult to treat.

Wrong-way driving has again caused an accident in the Sacramento region.  It was only a few short months ago we wrote about a spate of the wrong-way driver causing fatal automobile accidents in the Sacramento region.  You can read that blog post here.  Now again, last night (July 30, 2015) there is another suspected incident involving a wrong-way drunk driver on Highway 99 near 47th Avenue.

Types of Injuries Associated with Falls

Common  Fractures after a Motor Vehicle Accident

Common Fractures occur in Motor vehicle accidents with high-velocity impacts. There can be  fractures to many different bones throughout the body.  Often, fractures can be found from head to toe, depending on where the impact was and where the individual was located in the vehicle.  Those passengers or the driver with an airbag tend to suffer less from head, neck,  and chest fractures but they are still possible, especially if the individual isn’t seat-belted properly.

traffic light
The City of Elk Grove has utilized signal synchronization along many streets within its limits.  The purpose of signal synchronization is to make traffic patterns more efficient.  It is frustrating as a driver to speed up, slow down and stop, then repeat the process over and over as you hit red light after red light on arterial streets.  The goal of synchronizing traffic signals is that drivers traveling the speed limit will have the signal turn green as they approach, eliminating, or at least reducing, the frustrating pattern of stop and go.

Signal synchronization can mean that side street and left turn lane lights are red for longer periods of time, and even when there is no cross traffic.  This occurs because the synchronized signals are functioning as a group, and the major arterial streets get priority passage.  The time “wasted” waiting for a side street or left turn lane to turn green should be easily recovered within the smooth passage on the main streets.  It is also important to note that the synchronization if in effect during heavy traffic times only, such as 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, although some areas are scheduled to be synced during the day on weekends as well.  Late at night, when the system is not in operation, a side street light should not take as long to turn green.

elk grove auto accidentsElk Grove is a rapidly-growing suburb of Sacramento, California.  As is common with suburban areas in California, it is primarily dependent upon automobiles for transportation of its citizens.

A tool used by many cities and counties for planning, designing, and maintaining safe transportation systems is traffic engineering, and where the primary mode of transport is the motor vehicle, traffic engineering is all about cars. In Elk Grove, the Traffic Engineering Section is part of the Department of Public Works. In other cities and counties, traffic engineering may similarly be carried out by a separate office or more generally by whatever public works department may have responsibility for the roadways.
