I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento personal injury attorney. Campylobacter is a type of bacterium that can cause intestinal illnesses and infections.  The bacteria are a significant cause of many foodborne diarrheal illnesses in humans and are actually the most common bacteria that cause gastroenteritis worldwide.  While campylobacter infections are typically mild illnesses, complications can lead one to develop paralysis from Guillain-Barre syndrome, and an infection can sometimes even cause death, particularly in more sensitive populations like children, the elderly, and the immunosuppressed.

I’m Ed Smith, a Fair Oaks Personal Injury Lawyer. There are a number of different vibrio bacteria that cause an illness known as vibriosis.  Three of the most common species of vibrio that cause illness in the United States are Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio alginolyticus.  Vibrio is thought to cause about 80,000 illnesses annually in the United States, 52,000 of which are linked to the consumption of contaminated food.  Vibrio is also estimated to cause 100 deaths every year in the United States.  Because vibrio naturally lives in salt or brackish water, you can ingest vibrio bacteria if you consume contaminated undercooked or raw seafood, especially oysters.  Oysters eat by filtering water, so when an oyster filters water containing the vibrio bacteria, the bacteria can concentrate in the oyster’s tissues.  Vibrio food poisoning most often occurs in Gulf Coast states like Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas, and about eighty percent of cases happen between May and October when water temperatures are warmer.  While most cases of vibrio poisoning are caused by contaminated food, it is also possible to expose yourself to the bacteria if an open wound comes in contact with seawater.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that causes listeriosis, which is a serious infection that can occur if someone eats food that is contaminated with the listeria bacteria.  Listeriosis primarily affects pregnant women, older adults, infants, and those with weakened immune systems, though, on occasion, people without these risk factors can also be affected by the disease.  In the United States, it is estimated that approximately 1,600 people get sick from listeria every year, and of these 1,600 people, about 260 of them die.

I’m Ed Smith, an East Sacramento Personal Injury Lawyer. Hepatitis A is a virus that causes liver disease, and that typically is transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated water or food, or through direct contact with an infectious person.  Because there is an effective vaccine available to prevent hepatitis A, it is usually those who are unvaccinated that are more at risk of contracting hepatitis A from contaminated water or food.  While other hepatitis viruses can cause chronic liver disease, hepatitis A can cause debilitating symptoms and acute liver failure, which is sudden and temporary, but it can also be fatal.

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Personal Injury Lawyer. Botulism is a serious type of food poisoning that can occur if you ingest food that contains a neurotoxin produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum.  Clostridium botulinum bacteria tend to thrive and produce the neurotoxin in an environment with little oxygen, such as that found in canned goods.  Even a tiny amount of the neurotoxin can cause you to be severely ill.  While botulism is not the most common form of food poisoning, it can be deadly if the illness is not caught right away and properly treated.
