Panera Bread Recalls Cream Cheese for Listeria

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Personal Injury Lawyer. Recently, Panera Bread issued a recall for cream cheese sold in its facilities. The recall was prompted by a finding of Listeria in samples of the product. The company is offering a full refund for the affected products.

Details

Panera Bread announced what was described as a voluntary recall saying that this was being done as a cautionary move since the safety of customers is necessary. According to the company, 2-ounce samples tested in a single production run showed signs of contamination with Listeria. The company has since stopped manufacturing at that production facility. Samples tested prior to and after the contaminated samples were negative for Listeria.

What Products Are Involved?

The company recalled all 2 oz. and 8 oz. sized products of Panera cream cheese that will not expire on or until April 18, 2018. It involves only products sold in the United States. The following are involved in the recall:

  • Two-ounce size cream cheese: Variety of flavors and plain
  • Eight-ounce cream cheese: Variety of flavors and plain

Customers can call Panera Bread’s customer service at (855) 6-Panera or contact the company online at panera.custhelp.com for a refund.

What is Listeria?

Listeria is a bacteria that causes serious problems, particularly in certain segments of the population, according to the Mayo Clinic. Listeria can be found in cattle and poultry as well as the soil. Some products such as raw milk and foods made from raw milk are at a high risk of being contaminated by Listeria. On occasion, Listeria is found in plants that process food. The most common foods that may be contaminated with Listeria are:

  • Deli Meats
  • Sprouts
  • Smoked fish
  • Hot dogs
  • Pâtés
  • Milk that is not pasteurized
  • Soft cheeses such as Brie, Feta, and Camembert or cream cheese and queso fresco

Symptoms of Listeria Infection

For most people infected with Listeria, fever and diarrhea might occur. Others such as those with immune system problems such as HIV, cancer patients, those with hepatic disease, diabetics, those with transplanted organs or the elderly might develop the following symptoms:

  • Muscle aches
  • Fever
  • Stiff neck
  • A headache
  • Convulsions
  • Confusion

The symptoms can appear three to seven days after ingesting the product and last several days to several weeks. Antibiotics can be used to treat the disease. Pregnant women, who have a greater chance of contracting Listeria, are a particular problem since without treatment the disease can infect the unborn fetus. It can also cause a miscarriage, stillbirth or significant health issues after birth.

Newborns

For those babies who do not succumb to an intrauterine infection, they may develop Listeria within days of being born. Signs can include:

  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

Prevention of Listeria

There are ways to prevent Listeria infections:

  • Never eat products made with unpasteurized milk or drink it.
  • Wash produce.
  • Cook all raw animal foods.
  • Use foods before the expiration date.
  • People in high-risk populations should heat deli meats and hot dogs prior to eating.
  • Wash all utensils or cutting boards after cutting or preparing food.
  • Wash hands thoroughly.
