Thousand Oaks, California: Dangerous Intersections

I’m Ed Smith, a Thousand Oaks car accident lawyer. I am here to help when you, or a member of your family, have been injured and you can call me personally. Even in cities such as Thousand Oaks where it’s fairly tranquil and accidents are less common, there are still intersections where residents need to exercise more caution to stay safe. Let’s take a look at some of the intersections in Thousand Oaks where accidents have occurred.

Thousand Oaks Dangerous Intersections

  • Moorpark Road and Hillcrest Drive
Local residents may remember 1998, when the intersection of Moorpark Road and Hillcrest Drive was named as the most dangerous intersection in the country because it averaged an accident almost every two weeks.
  • Rancho Road and East Hillcrest Drive
A car lost control and swerved into traffic in March 2017, killing two people and injuring others.
  • Kirk Avenue and Jass Road
Pedestrian struck by driver and died of his injuries in November 2016.
  • Boxthorn Avenue and Lynn Road
A motorcyclist struck a dog walker, who was critically injured in September 2016. The motorcyclist was charged with felony DUI.

Thousand Oaks DUI Checkpoints

The traffic bureau of the Thousand Oaks Police Department periodically conducts checkpoints to catch DUIs and those driving without a license or with expired licenses. The latest ones were on March 18 at Knollwood Drive and Lynn Road and Calle Haya and Avenida De Los Arboles. After screening 301 vehicles, one individual was arrested for DUI and five drivers were cited or arrested for driving without a license or with a revoked or suspended license.

Keeping Drunk Drivers Off the Road

Checkpoints have proven to be an effective deterrent to lower the number of motor vehicle deaths and injuries associated with drunk driving accidents. According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after a review of 11 studies, checkpoints have been shown to reduce property damage, injuries and deaths caused by alcohol-associated accidents by about 20 percent each.

California Drunk Driving Statistics

The California Department of Motor Vehicles releases an annual report on drunk driver statistics in the state. The latest information shows that in 2013, there were 160,388 arrests made of drivers under the influence. While most were for misdemeanor DUIs, 4,789 were for felony DUI. Fatalities were involved in 1,197 crashes and caused 23,178 injuries.
Accidents caused by a drunk driver can result in serious injuries with high medical bills, present and future lost income and other personal injury damages. That’s when an injured person needs the assistance of an experienced car accident lawyer.
