Crash Near Kyburz Causes in Severe Injuries
On Thursday, January 7, 2021, a car crash near Kyburz left one person with severe injuries. Police reported that this accident happened in the afternoon and involved two vehicles. The injured party was identified as a 23-year-old woman from Yuba City, and updates on her medical condition have not yet been made available. Additionally, California Highway Patrol (CHP) is still investigating the incident.
Crash Information
The accident reportedly occurred at around 2:45 p.m. on Highway 50 near the small community of Kyburz, around ten miles east of Pollock Pines. According to CHP, a 28-year-old Sacramento man was driving a Cadillac Escalade heading east on the highway near Alder Creek Road when his vehicle drifted toward the right-hand shoulder. Police have indicated that they do not currently know what caused the Escalade to drift.
As the Escalade approached the highway shoulder, the driver apparently attempted to correct course. As a result, the car veered left and crossed into westbound traffic. At this time, a 54-year-old Concord man was driving westbound in his Toyota Rav4. According to CHP, the Cadillac crossed in front of the Toyota and crashed into a rock wall. After the Cadillac crashed, the Toyota collided with its right side.
Response to Crash Near Kyburz
Officials from CHP and the El Dorado County Fire Protection District arrived on-scene shortly after the collision occurred. When they arrived, officers found that the front-seat passenger of the Escalade had sustained severe injuries. The woman was placed on a helicopter and flown to the Sutter Roseville Medical Center for emergency care. The Cadillac driver reportedly sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital via ambulance. The driver and sole occupant of the Rav4 were not injured during the crash.
Investigation
As police investigate the crash, officers have reported that they do not believe driver intoxication was a factor and added that all parties were properly wearing seat belts. As investigations continue, officials are looking into multiple possible causes including factors outside of driver control such as issues with defective car parts and roadway defects.
