A fatal pedestrian accident involving a man, 56, occurred in Natomas on May 4 when he was struck by a car while trying to cross a highway. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the accident happened on Interstate 5 shortly after 3:30 a.m. near Arena Boulevard in the Natomas Crossing area. The man was attempting to cross from the northbound shoulder to the opposite side when he entered the northbound fast lane and was hit by a Hyundai driven by a driver, age 30.

The impact sent the pedestrian into the freeway’s center median, according to a CHP North Sacramento spokesperson. Emergency responders from the CHP and the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the scene of the fatal pedestrian accident around 3:39 a.m. However, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the site.

Identity of Man in Fatal Pedestrian Accident to Be Released

The driver of the Hyundai, who stayed behind to cooperate with law enforcement, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries sustained in the incident. The name of the deceased is to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after his family is notified. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is currently being conducted by the CHP traffic unit.

Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims: The Role of Negligence

To file a wrongful death claim, establishing negligence in an accident leading to a pedestrian’s death remains crucial. An injury attorney will actively conduct investigations, consolidating evidence to support the claim for damages on behalf of the victim’s family. This includes reviewing police reports, interviewing witnesses, and seeking surveillance footage among other investigative approaches. Using the collected evidence, an experienced injury lawyer will construct a compelling case to negotiate with the at-fault party’s insurance company or take legal action in court.

Securing Compensation after a Wrongful Death

Families filing a wrongful death claim due to a loved one’s death in a fatal pedestrian accident caused by another’s negligence stand to recover significant compensation. Generally the claim is filed by the surviving spouse or partner and children of the deceased. If the deceased had no spouse or children, other family members, such as the siblings and parents of the decedent may file. Recoverable damages include:

  • Funeral and burial costs reimbursement is available for family members.
  • The deceased’s anticipated earnings until the presumed retirement age can be claimed.
  • Spouses and children may receive compensation for their losses.
  • The economic value of household tasks the deceased managed, necessitating external hire for these services, is compensable.
