Bicyclist Injured in Hit and Run on U.S. 50

A hit-and-run in South Lake Tahoe on May 22 caused injuries to a bicycle rider when they were struck by a vehicle. The collision happened around 8:21 a.m. along eastbound U.S. 50 at Country Club Drive. Fire Department emergency responders were called to the scene by officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and determined that the bicyclist had been injured in the collision. However, the extent of the injuries is unknown. 

Accident on S.R. 89 Takes Life of Fair Oaks Woman

A woman died on November 14 in a single-vehicle crash close to South Lake Tahoe. The accident occurred along S.R. 89 southbound near Pickett’s Junction around 4:25 in the morning. The accident occurred when the driver, in a Hyundai Elantra, exited the roadway for unknown reasons and crashed into a boulder, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP)

Golf Cart Driver Dies in Collision on Highway 28

The driver of a golf cart in Tahoe City traveling along westbound Highway 28 was struck in a rear-end crash by a motor vehicle and killed on July 26. The accident involved a Tahoe City Downtown Association golf cart near the exit for Grove Street close to the golf course, which was being driven by a man from Kings Beach, identified as in his 50s. The collision into the back of the golf cart caused the man to be ejected, which resulted in fatal injuries. 

Drivers Heading to Lake Tahoe Delayed by Tractor-Trailer Fires

Two tractor-trailer fires along two major highways to Lake Tahoe occurred just at the same time as holiday vacationers were making their way toward this popular destination. A large tractor-trailer fire near Kyburz in El Dorado County closed down the highway for hours on July 1 as firefighters battled the blaze when it spread to the surrounding area. The incident occurred along Highway 50 shortly before 11:30 a.m. and was responded to by the Placerville office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Highway 50 was shut down in both directions as the blaze spread into nearby vegetation. 

Serious Three-Vehicle Crash Near South Lake Tahoe 

On Friday, August 6, 2021, two people suffered serious injuries during a car crash near South Lake Tahoe. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials reported that the accident involved three vehicles and happened a few miles south of the city. The injured individuals were identified as a 56-year-old Placerville man and a woman from Wellington, Nevada. Updates on their injuries haven’t been reported and CHP continues to investigate the collision.

Fatal Crash Near Echo Summit on Highway 50

On the afternoon of Thursday, July 22, 2021, one person was killed, and at least five others were injured in a multi-car head-on collision in the vicinity of Echo Summit on U.S. Highway 50. The crash resulted in the closure of Highway 50 for more than two hours.

Drowning Incident on Lake Tahoe

On the afternoon of Monday, July 5, 2021, a young man from Northern California lost his life in a boating incident. The drowning incident took place on Lake Tahoe near Secret Cove. The young man had been enjoying an afternoon on the boat with several other teenagers. The victim was identified by The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office as a 17-year-old resident of Greenbrae, California. It has since been learned that he was going to be a senior at Redwood High School in Larkspur, California, and had been a member of the school’s baseball and football teams.

Roundabout Planned for Highway 50 & Pioneer Trail

The intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Pioneer Trail will be the site of a new roundabout in an attempt by El Dorado County officials to control traffic and increase safety in the area. This project, which is in its early stages, was being considered by the county prior to the completion of the roundabout at Highway 50 and 89. Officials have been encouraged by the perceived success of that roundabout.

Right Turns Prohibited at Two Tahoe Intersections

A pilot program kicked off recently in South Lake Tahoe, California, that is aimed at alleviating traffic in residential neighborhoods. On the weekend following the implementation of the program, multiple vehicles were pulled over based on violation of the new rules regarding turn restrictions. Most of those who were stopped were visitors to the area.
