Horseback Rider Seriously Injured and Horse Killed When Struck by Van

MERCED, CA — A horseback rider seriously injured and horse killed when struck by van were enjoying a quiet horseback ride before sunrise on Monday morning, October 5, 2026, in Merced County when they were hit by a Nissan van.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the collision happened at approximately 5:40 Monday morning, Oct. 5, on Santa Fe Dr., to the east of Fox Road.

Tragically, the horse did not survive the collision.

CHP investigators said a Winton resident, aged 55, was driving his van about 55 mph east on Santa Fe Dr. when the rider and horse began to cross the road.

According to CHP, it was still dark outside, and the roadway was not illuminated by streetlights, making it difficult or impossible for the van driver to see the man on horseback before the collision.

The force of the impact threw the rider from the horse, causing major injuries. He was airlifted to a Modesto medical center. His condition was later reported as critical. As of Wednesday morning, no further public update on his condition had been released.

The Nissan van driver sustained moderate injuries, but stayed at the scene to talk to officials.

CHP reported there were no indications that impairment contributed to the accident. Santa Fe Drive was temporarily closed while emergency crews treated those involved and investigators worked to determine what happened.

The identities of the rider and driver have not been publicly released.

The collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

For the injured rider and those who care about him, the aftermath of a crash like this is about far more than the initial impact. A critical injury can bring fear, uncertainty, hospitalization, and a long road toward recovery. And in this case, there is also the heartbreaking loss of an animal that was part of the rider’s life.

Those affected will now have to face the difficult days ahead while investigators work to piece together exactly what happened in those early-morning hours.
