Officials in Modesto reported a fatal single-vehicle crash in a dry creek embankment in Modesto. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 18, 2023, near Coffee Road and Scenic Drive at approximately 11:00 a.m.

On the morning of March 15, 2023, the California Highway Patrol reported a car crash with injuries on SR-99 at Tuolumne Boulevard in Modesto. The auto collision occurred around 10:50 a.m. on southbound State Route 99, according to authorities.

Fatalities Reported in Orange Avenue Intersection Two-Vehicle Crash

A two-vehicle crash on March 6 in a rural area of Stanislaus County caused three fatalities and two injuries. The Modesto Office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said a call came in about the accident at about 2:20 p.m. near the intersection of Orange and Elm avenues, which is near Patterson. Upon arrival, they discovered a Dodge Ram pickup and a Dodge SUV, both with major damage. 

Fatal Tractor Accident Occurs on West Olsen Road

A tractor accident near Modesto on March 4 caused the operator’s death. The accident was reported around 5:00 p.m. along West Olsen Road in La Grange. Firefighters with the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District were called to the scene of an orchard where a man was reported as trapped between a tree and the tractor. 

Walking and Biking Will Be Easier on Paradise Road in Modesto 

Pedestrians and bicyclists will be safer around traffic on half a mile of Paradise Road in west Modesto, thanks to a $3.56 million state grant. The City will use the funds to make part of the road more convenient to walk and ride a bicycle. The construction will cover the stretch of road between Sheridan Street and Modesto High School, along with several blocks of side streets.

Hit-and-Run Fatality on Prescott Road

The Modesto Police Department reported a fatality following a hit-and-run accident on Prescott Road. The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, January 17, 2023, just south of Standiford Avenue, officials said.

Fatal Bicycle Collision on Almond Avenue

On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 10, 2023, CHP traffic officers reported a fatal vehicle versus bicycle collision on Almond Avenue in the Modesto area. The incident occurred on Almond Avenue in the vicinity of Elm Avenue at approximately 3:20 p.m. and involved a Chevrolet sedan, officials said.

Single-Vehicle Collision Near Oakdale

The California Highway Patrol reported that three parties were injured in a single-vehicle collision near Oakdale on January 7, 2023. The solo car crash occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. on Highway 108-120 in the vicinity of Lancaster Road, according to officials.

Safety Initiatives to Combat Increased Modesto Traffic Deaths

The City of Modesto is actively pursuing traffic safety initiatives primarily through the passage of Measure H, a 1 percent sales tax increase approved by voters in November 2020. This new tax goes into effect on April 1, 2023, and is projected to generate $39 million yearly. These funds will be used to support public safety measures such as safer and cleaner parks, reduction of blight and faster 911 response times. Additionally, the funds are expected to provide enhanced enforcement measures to lower traffic deaths and injuries. The City Council will begin discussing the allocation of Measure H funds in the coming months, with respective department heads presenting proposals for consideration.

Modesto Ranked Second Worst Among its Peer Cities for Traffic Crashes 

According to the latest rankings from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Modesto drivers are ranked the second worst for auto accidents among its peer cities across California. The rankings examined over a dozen traffic collisions, including crashes involving DUI, pedestrians, bicyclists, hit-and-run, and more.
