CHP Urges Motorcycle Safety and Driver Vigilance

As the summer season approaches, bringing warmer temperatures, many motorcycle enthusiasts are expected to take advantage of the weather, traveling along the Golden State’s scenic routes on their two-wheelers. However, with this increased activity, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Stanislaus County urges caution, particularly for those who might ride recklessly.

More CHP Presence on the Road

The CHP plans to substantially heighten the presence of officers on the roads, focusing specifically on motorcycle riders who may commit violations such as speeding, tailgating, or executing unsafe turns. According to CHP spokesperson Thomas Olsen, the enforcement efforts will primarily concentrate on State Route 219 and State Route 99.

Keeping a Watchful Eye on Motorists

Olsen noted that their attention will focus on motorcycles that could endanger their safety and that of others. He further elaborated that this increased vigilance would not be solely directed at motorcyclists. Officers will also be keeping a watchful eye on passenger vehicles that could potentially jeopardize the safety of motorcyclists and other road users.

Olsen stressed the importance of all motorists adopting a defensive driving approach, which entails maintaining a keen awareness of their surroundings. He underlined the specific need for drivers of vehicles to stay vigilant for motorcyclists who might be approaching from behind.

The Use of Protective Gear and Helmets

The CHP also advises motorcyclists, encouraging the use of bright-colored protective clothing and Department of Transportation-approved helmets, urging caution while lane splitting, and recommending that headlights remain on. This advice comes in light of persistent motorcycle accident issues across the state. For instance, the Modesto area reported over 80 motorcycle-involved injury crashes and nine fatal motorcycle crashes in 2021 alone.

The CHP’s intensified enforcement efforts in the Modesto area are set to continue until the end of September, providing an additional layer of safety oversight for motorcycle riders and all road users alike.

The YouTube video below discusses some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents.

Preventing Injuries in a Motorcycle Accident

Preventing injuries in a motorcycle accident involves both proactive measures before you ride and safety practices while on the road. Here are some strategies that could significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries:

  • Wear the Right Gear: Always wear a helmet that meets Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, and consider a full-face helmet for maximum protection. Wear protective clothing like a leather jacket, long pants, gloves, and boots that cover the ankles to protect against abrasions. High-visibility clothing or reflectors can make you more visible to other drivers.
  • Proper Training: Enroll in a motorcycle safety course. These courses teach you advanced techniques like defensive driving and emergency evasion maneuvers. Regular refresher courses can also be beneficial.
  • Maintain Your Motorcycle: Regular maintenance is crucial. Ensure the lights, brakes, and turn signals are working correctly. Check tire pressure and tread depth regularly.
  • Avoid Aggressive Driving: Speeding and reckless driving are significant causes of motorcycle accidents. Follow traffic rules, respect other road users, and always signal your intentions.
  • Stay Visible: Stay out of drivers’ blind spots, especially larger vehicles. Make sure other drivers can see you at all times.
  • Never Drink and Ride: Alcohol and drugs impair your ability to ride and react to emergencies.
  • Ride According to Conditions: Poor weather or road conditions require slower speeds and extra caution. Consider postponing your ride if conditions are especially bad.
  • Lane Splitting: If you decide to split lanes, do so carefully and responsibly, and only if it’s legal in your jurisdiction.

Remember, even the most cautious riders can’t control the actions of other drivers. If you’ve been injured in an accident due to another driver’s negligence, seek medical attention immediately and consult with a personal injury attorney to understand your rights and options.
