The Food Days of February

Now that our January diets have ended and our good intentions of healthful resolutions have faded from our memories, we enter February 2021, with its new crop of food-related National Days.  There are quite a few big eating holidays this month so let’s get started!

  • February 2: National Tater Tot Day.  Kicking off the month of celebratory eating is this frozen potato favorite.  While tater tots are delicious all on their own, to make the day even more special, try totchos, which are like nachos, only with tater tots instead of tortilla chips.  Brilliant.  Here is a recipe from Delish.com.
  • February 3: National Carrot Cake Day.  If you are still full from yesterday’s totchos, maybe a full-sized cake isn’t on the menu for the day.  For a bite-sized treat, nothing beats the carrot cake Bundtini from Nothing Bundt Cakes.
  • February 4: National Homemade Soup Day.  Wholesome!  Why not offset the month’s indulgences with a nutritious creamy lentil soup created by The Vegan 8?
  • February 5: World Nutella Day.  Although Nutella is just fine on a spoon straight from the jar, ramp up the delicious factor by making s’mores and replacing the chocolate bar with a large smear of this classic chocolate hazelnut spread.
  • February 6: National Chopsticks Day.  This day calls for take-out.  Aung Maylika or Stockpot will hook you up.
  • February 7: The Big Game!  Watch youngster Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs end the reign of the GOAT, Tom Brady, who will be playing with his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccanneers.  This day rivals Thanksgiving for its opportunities for indulgence.  Make some onion dip, grill some burgers, and watch a bunch of men in incredible physical condition battle it out on the gridiron as you sit on your couch enjoying mountains of snacks.
  • February 8: National Football Hangover Day.  It’s the day after the Super Bowl and you ate all the onion dip.  How about some kale?
  • February 9: National Pizza Day.  After yesterday’s green salad, it’s time to get back off track.  Order a pie from Napoli Pizzeriaa Vallejo favorite.
  • February 11: National Peppermint Patty Day.  Enjoy the classic York’s treat.
  • February 13: National Tortellini Day.  Look no further than your grocery store’s freezer section for an easy pesto tortellini bowl that just takes a few minutes in the microwave.
  • February 14: Valentine’s Day.  Eat all the chocolate. Deprivation is coming.
  • February 16:  Fat Tuesday.  In the Catholic tradition, Fat Tuesday represents perhaps the most gluttonous day of the year.  It falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period leading up to Easter in which the faithful are encouraged to give up something enjoyable.  In anticipation of the period of deprivation, on Fat Tuesday, all manner of indulgence is encouraged.  Keep it Mardi Gras style and load up on beignets and gumbo. Wash it all down with a hurricane.

  • February 17: Ash Wednesday.  Catholics, the fun is over.  Peace be with you.  See you at Easter.
  • February 18: National Drink Wine Day.  Pour a glass of pinot noir.  For added pleasure, walk by the front window of your neighbor who gave up alcohol for Lent.
  • February 22: National California Day and February 24: National Tortilla Chip Day.  It makes sense to combine these celebratory days.  Many of us agree that the unofficial food of California is the taco, so place a pick-up order from your favorite taqueria, and don’t forget to ask for extra chips and salsa.
  • February 26: National Chili Day.  Sometimes we get exceptionally cold weather in Northern California during the month of February.  Nothing beats chili on a chilly day – preferably served in a sourdough bread bowl.
  • February 28: Tartar Sauce Day.  Really?  Tartar Sauce?  It looks like someone ran out of legitimate National Days.  It’s a good thing the month is over!
