Head-On Crash on Highway 299 Near Lewiston in Trinity County

A head-on crash on Highway 299 near Lewiston in Trinity County on Wednesday afternoon, August 5, 2026, involving at least two vehicles led to closures of the highway near Fawn Lodge Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Head-On Collision Reported Near Mile Marker 68

The crash was reported at approximately 3:54 p.m. near mile marker 68 on Highway 299.

According to CHP dispatch information, two vehicles collided head-on, leaving one vehicle in the eastbound lane and the second vehicle approximately 100 yards away in the westbound lane.

Initial reports indicated that multiple people were involved in the collision.

Vehicles Described as “Mangled”

Later dispatch reports confirmed that both vehicles sustained heavy damage. By 4:06 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the wreckage was blocking the road, necessitating immediate traffic control measures.

Shortly after, at approximately 4:15 p.m., officers requested a tow truck for a black BMW missing its front wheels, which was partially obstructing the westbound lane. Ultimately, two tow trucks were sent to clear the scene.

To warn drivers of the crash and ensuing delays, the CHP released a Highway Emergency and Weather Advisory Bulletin at 4:28 p.m.

Witness Reports Alleged Reckless Driving

According to dispatch logs, a witness later contacted CHP and reported that the driver of the black BMW had allegedly passed her vehicle and approximately five other vehicles in an unsafe manner near Oak Bottom before the collision.

The witness requested that her information be added to the incident report as part of the ongoing investigation into suspected reckless driving.

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist at the scene.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
