Caltrans Conducting Major Tree Removal on Highway 49

Beginning on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, Caltrans will be conducting a major tree removal project on Highway 49 in Nevada County. The project is reportedly in preparation for a large construction project scheduled to take place in 2021. According to officials, the tree removal project will take place over a two week period and is expected to affect area traffic.

Project Details

The project will be taking place near Quail Creek Drive and Round Valley Road. Crews will be removing trees in the area most nights between 7:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. from Oct 20 until October 31. However, authorities have indicated that these dates may be affected by weather. Updated information about the project can be found on Caltrans’ local Twitter feed.

Caltrans has indicated that one-way traffic control will be instituted on Highway 49 while the work is underway and that area residents should expect to hear heavy equipment noises, including loud chainsaws, during the above-mentioned hours. In addition to reduced lanes, drivers should expect intermittent traffic stops while crews work to remove downed trees from the highway.

Further Construction

This tree removal is the first stage of a 4.3 million dollar highway safety project scheduled that is reportedly intended to reduce the severity and number of car accidents in the area by adding a designated turn lane. According to details from Caltrans, major construction on this project is scheduled to begin as early as Spring 2021. Additionally, other preparation efforts, including utility relocation projects, are expected to take place over the coming fall and winter seasons.

Roadway Safety and Car Accidents

When people think of car accident factors, they most often think about violations committed by reckless drivers such as driving distracted or while intoxicated by drugs and/or alcohol. While the majority of collisions are primarily caused by reckless drivers, there are also often factors outside of driver control. One of the most common non-driver crash factors is hazardous roads.

If a particular stretch of road has large potholes or other serious pavement defects, it may knock a vehicle off-course or cause a driver to make a dangerous avoidance maneuver, resulting in a serious crash. In other cases, roads are dangerously designed, making it hard for drivers to practice safe driving techniques.

Roadway Defect Accidents and Calling a Lawyer

If a roadway defect causes an accident, the government in charge of maintaining that road may be considered an at-fault party. This means that people who’ve been injured in these accidents may be able to hold these governments financially responsible for damages they sustained as a result of the crash.

However, holding a government entity responsible through an injury claim can be very difficult and involves certain restrictions that do not apply to most injury claims, including dramatically shortened filing periods. For this reason, contacting an attorney as soon as possible after such an accident is critical.
