A major injury occurred in a pedestrian accident in North Highlands on September 26. Authorities Investigating to Determine Cause of Major Injury Accident

The injured pedestrian was transported to a hospital nearby to have her injuries treated. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene as an investigation into the cause of the pedestrian accident was conducted by authorities.

Pedestrians and Car Accident Injuries

Pedestrians are, unfortunately, the most vulnerable people in an accident that includes a motor vehicle. In addition, the severity of injuries and risk of becoming a fatality increase dramatically with the vehicle’s speed when it strikes them. Those injuries can result in a lengthy hospitalization and high medical bills in addition to the inability to work and pain and suffering. Trauma commonly suffered in a pedestrian accident includes:

  • Broken bones are common in a pedestrian accident, especially in the femur, hips or pelvis. This occurs because that’s where a vehicle commonly strikes the person on foot.
  • Traumatic brain injuries can occur in any type of pedestrian accident. A TBI can range from a concussion to a much more serious condition such as a brain hemorrhage, fractured skull, and more.
  • Spinal cord damage that occurs due to a pedestrian accident can end up causing a life-long disability.
  • Back injuries can include torn or damaged ligaments and muscles or a herniated disc.
  • Trauma to the chest can be serious and life-threatening. It can include broken ribs, a collapsed lung, or even heart damage.

Common Reasons for a Motor Vehicle/Pedestrian Accident

Driver negligence causes many accidents involving a pedestrian. When negligence by another person or entity, such as lack of maintenance on a roadway, causes a pedestrian accident injury, they can be held liable for damages. Some of the types of negligence that can lead to a pedestrian accident include:

  • Drunk driving is a major cause of accidents, including those involving pedestrians.
  • Distracted driving has become a major reason for accidents of all types. A driver who is looking at their cell phone and texting, changing the radio station or just not concentrating on their driving can cause a crash.
  • Speeding by a motorist increases the risk of death to the pedestrian and of severe injuries.
  • Running a red light or stop sign often causes a pedestrian accident. In some cases, the driver runs the light because it’s still yellow approaching an intersection. In other cases, it’s intentional.
  • Fatigued driving can be the reason a pedestrian accident occurs. Studies show that a driver who is too tired to be behind the wheel of a car exhibits some of the same deficits as a drunk driver, including clouded judgment and slowed reflexes.
