Big Rig Carrying Pigs Overturns on Interstate 80 in Placer County
A big rig carrying pigs overturns on Interstate 80 in Placer County early Tuesday morning, June 23, 2026, causing significant traffic delays and prompting an extensive response from emergency crews and animal control officials.
Big Rig Overturns on Westbound I-80
The crash occurred along westbound Interstate 80, where the overturned trailer forced the closure of all westbound lanes.
To keep traffic moving, the California Highway Patrol diverted westbound motorists off Interstate 80 at Secret Town Road while crews worked at the scene. Authorities advised drivers to expect significant delays and use alternate routes, as there was no estimated time for the freeway to fully reopen.
Pigs Escape Following Crash
Following the rollover, several pigs escaped from the overturned trailer and were seen running loose before responders safely corralled the animals.
Witnesses reported that numerous pigs remained trapped inside the trailer. Emergency crews determined the trailer was too heavy to safely upright with the animals still inside and instead planned to cut into the trailer to release the remaining pigs.
Shortly after 7 a.m., responders began freeing additional pigs from the trailer. By around 8 a.m., crews were loading the animals into another livestock trailer for transport.
Placer County Animal Services also responded to assist with recovering the escaped pigs. Officials reported that at least five of the loose animals had been secured inside one of the agency’s vehicles.
Driver Transported to Hospital
The driver of the big rig was transported to a nearby hospital following the crash. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver did not appear to have suffered major injuries.
Authorities have not released information regarding what caused the rollover, and the collision remains under investigation.

Commercial Vehicle Safety
Commercial truck rollovers can create dangerous roadway conditions, especially when cargo spills onto the highway. Drivers should slow down when approaching emergency scenes, follow detour instructions, and give first responders adequate space to safely perform their duties.
