Tanker Semi Overturns on Interstate 5 Near Sweetbriar Avenue in Shasta County
Tanker semi overturns on Interstate 5 near Sweetbriar Avenue in Shasta County along southbound I-5 on Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Tanker Truck Overturns Along Interstate 5
The crash was reported at approximately 7:45 a.m. when emergency dispatchers received reports of an air-ride truck that had left the roadway.
Shortly afterward, CHP dispatch logs confirmed that a tanker semi had overturned onto its side.
Initial reports indicated that the truck had been hauling road oil, prompting concerns about a potential hazardous materials incident.
Lane Closures Cause Traffic Delays
Investigators later confirmed that the tanker was empty at the time of the crash and that there was no hazardous materials release.
CHP reported that the truck’s saddle tank remained intact and that crankcase oil was contained on the roadway.
Emergency crews temporarily closed the No. 1 lane and partially blocked the No. 2 lane while traffic was diverted onto the shoulder.
By approximately 8:04 a.m., CHP reported that motorists were still able to travel through the area using the remaining lane and shoulder while crews continued clearing the scene.
A heavy-duty tow truck was requested to remove the overturned semi, and officials later advised that traffic lanes would reopen once the recovery operation was complete.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not released information regarding possible injuries or what caused the truck to leave the roadway.
The collision remains under investigation.
Rollover Crashes Involving Commercial Vehicles Can Create Serious Hazards
Semi-truck rollover collisions can create significant traffic disruptions because of their size, weight, and the potential for fuel or cargo spills. Even when hazardous materials are not released, overturned commercial vehicles can block multiple lanes and create dangerous conditions for both emergency responders and other motorists.
Drivers approaching an active crash scene should reduce their speed, remain alert, and follow all traffic-control instructions.
