Vacaville Truck Collision Causes Major Injury

I’m Ed Smith, a Vacaville car accident lawyer. On Monday, June 26, 2017, a big-rig truck overturned in Vacaville and left one man with major traumatic injuries. More about this collision can be found below.

Accident Details

According to reports from the Vacaville Fire Department (VFD), officials were first made aware of the trucking accident when they received a report from a passing driver at about 11:08 a.m. The driver indicated that a large tractor-trailer had overturned near the Davis Street off-ramp for Interstate 80.

Officials reported that the vehicle spilled about 6,000 gallons of the organic sunflower oil that it had been transporting. The oil spilled after its casing was punctured in the accident, causing it to spill slowly into a nearby storm drain.

An Injured Driver

Emergency responders found that the driver of the big rig had sustained serious, although not life-threatening. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance so that he could receive emergency medical attention.

No other vehicles or persons were involved in the accident.

Possible Causes

VFD Battalion Chief Gary Mahlberg noted that the accident could have happened as the result of a medical condition that the driver may have had. Medical responders reported that the driver did seem to be disoriented when they were helping him exit the overturned vehicle, although this may have been due to a possible head injury sustained in the accident.

Mahlberg also indicated that officials do not yet know if the driver had been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Cleaning up a Spill

The California Highway Patrol (CHP), VFD, and the Vacaville Police Department all responded to this incident. At first, a hazardous materials team was sent to the site of the collision to deal with the spilled materials. However, when workers realized that they were dealing with sunflower oil, normal cleanup crews were called in.

Because officials were worried about the oil’s effects on the city’s drainage system, public work crews brought in loads of sand to prevent the oil from continuing to seep into nearby storm drains. The company that owned the truck also called in private work crews from Santa Rosa to assist the city with mopping up the spilled oil.

Traffic

CHP instituted a traffic block at the Davis Street I-80 off-ramp in order to protect workers from passing vehicles and to help vehicles avoid the dangerous roadway conditions. The traffic block was lifted sometime later in the afternoon.
