Significant Injuries Reported in County Road 98 Head-On Collision

A head-on collision in Woodland between two vehicles on June 12 resulted in critical injuries to one person. The accident occurred around 1:19 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 98 at County Road 27, blocking the roadway. One party was reported unconscious by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers who arrived at the scene, and medics with the fire department arrived to assess injuries.

Investigation Underway to Determine Cause of Head-On Collision

Medics reported that one person involved in the head-on crash was in critical condition. That patient was transported to a hospital. Both vehicles sustained major front-end damage in the crash and had to be towed from the scene. The CHP traffic collision unit is handling the incident to determine how the accident happened.

Factors Contributing to a Head-On Collision

Collisions caused by head-ons are among the deadliest of all motor vehicle crashes. They occur when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions strike each other frontally. Such a crash can result in serious injuries or death for the drivers and passengers involved, as well as substantial property damage. The main factors that contribute to head-on crashes include:

  • Driver error: Drivers may be distracted, speeding, impaired by alcohol or drugs or simply not paying attention. Other errors, such as disregarding traffic rules or failing to yield the right of way, can also trigger a head-on crash.
  • Improper passing: In rural areas on a two-lane road, a driver may attempt to pass another vehicle without having a clear view up ahead. Others may pass on a double-yellow line. Other problems include those who pull out of a side road without watching for oncoming traffic.
  • Poor road conditions: Poorly maintained roads with inadequate signage can lead to confusion and loss of control for any driver navigating them. A lack of guardrails or other safety amenities can also contribute to head-on collisions. If a lack of maintenance is involved in a frontal collision injury accident, the government entity may be liable. Because the time limit to file this type of claim is six months, getting help from an accident attorney may be advisable.
  • Mechanical failures: Malfunctions due to defects with a vehicle’s brakes, steering system, or other parts can cause it to cross into oncoming traffic and lead to a collision. Retaining a crashed vehicle helps because engineers can examine it to determine if a defect led to the crash, such as loss of control. An auto product liability claim against the part maker, manufacturer, and others may be possible in these cases.
