Family Fun Activities at the Santa Barbara Fair

Local residents and tourists wait all year for the Santa Barbara Fair and Expo, which is running through April 30, 2017,  in the Earl Warren Showgrounds at 3400 Calle Real. This year’s theme is “Back to the 50s,” so this is an event you don’t want to miss.

Weekend Entertainment for the Family

Entertainment and things to do at the fair over the weekend are plentiful. From cooking contests, a carnival midway with rides, food vendors, farm animals and plenty of live entertainment to demonstrations and exhibits, the Fonz and all his friends from “Happy Days” would have loved this. And, you don’t want to forget to make it over to the Sock Hop Stage to see Unlimited on Saturday Night and Balle de California on Sunday night.

Fair Rides

The Santa Barbara Fair and Expo wouldn’t be complete without an assortment of carnival rides. This year, the little ones can enjoy riding in miniature boats, go Australian with Tommy Kangaroo, climb the Raiders, go on an adventure through the Jumping Jungle Funhouse or ride on the Looney Tooter Train. Bigger kids and those who still feel like a kid can check out the Giant Slide, Zombie Carnival, Scrambler, Mardi-Gras Maze with lights, music, and escalators that move, the huge Ferris wheel, and the almost 80-feet-high Inversion.

Safety on Amusement Rides

The Research Institute for Nationwide Children’s Hospital reported that between 1990 and 2010, 92,885 children were treated for injuries suffered on amusement park rides. Of the injuries received, 28 percent were head injuries and neck injuries, and 31 percent were from falling off or falling in, on, or against a ride, which can cause a spinal cord injury, broken bones or other injuries.

Under California regulations, safety measures must be taken to ensure that rides are safe. Companies provide rides to carnivals and fairs throughout the country and are responsible to make sure that the rides are routinely inspected for safety concerns. Aside from this, the rides must provide safety restraints that are in good working order. Operators have the additional obligation to make sure younger children are secured before the ride begins. If any of this is left undone, the company can be the focus of a common carrier lawsuit.

Food Safety

At county and community fairs, delicious food is everywhere. State regulations on food safety must be followed carefully. The California Safety Code outlines procedures vendors must use at such events. This involves keeping food at safe temperatures in every phase. For instance, food must be kept at a specific temperature before cooking. Once cooked, it can stand for a specific time,  at the proper temperature, and repeatedly checked. If these regulations are not followed, food poisoning can result.
