Sacramento Superior Court Hands Down Lengthy Prison Sentence

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Sexual Assault Lawyer. Few crimes are more heinous than the sexual abuse of children. Perhaps this is why a Sacramento Superior Court handed down a sentence that is set to expire when the convicted is 100 years of age.

A Case Lasting Years

Back in October, a jury returned a verdict of guilty for Steven Ramos, 54 years of age, on all 22 counts of child molestation, attempted forcible rape, and forcible rape. While this outcome is striking, the case actually started back in the mid-1990s. During this time, Steven Ramos started molesting two girls aged 5 and 6. The girls endured the preschool sexual assault until 1997, when they came forward with their allegations to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office. The girls felt the pressure of the legal system and recanted their allegations a year later. Free of charges, Ramos began abusing them again until their adolescent years.

The Allegations were Refiled

In the interest of bringing an end to the sexual assault, the girls filed allegations of sexual abuse with the District Attorney’s office again in 2012. They explained why they recanted and why they were filing charges again. By this time, the sexual assault had lasted almost two decades, an experience that few people can relate to. They shared their story with the El Dorado Law Enforcement again and Steven Ramos was again arrested on charges related to sexual molestation. A lengthy trial ensued, with testimony from both sides, and the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts.

A Lengthy Prison Sentence

Steven Ramos is now 54 years old and a sentence was handed down recently. Ramos was sentenced to 46 years in prison for his conviction. While justice has been served in this case, few people can relate to the pain endured by those two girls during their entire childhood. In fact, most victims of sexual assault know their abuser. Sex crimes spans all ages, ranging from nursing home abuse and school sexual assault to even therapist sexual assault. The first step in stopping this kind of abuse, particularly when it involves children, is to believe the victim when they share their story, often called an outcry witness. After this, people need to make sure they understand how to spot abuse so that any legal case can be supported. Victims of sex crimes also need to make sure they get help to prevent the development of comorbidities.
