Rollover Accident in Brentwood Traps Driver

I’m Ed Smith, a Brentwood Personal Injury Attorney. During the early morning hours of Sunday, February 11, 2018, a single-car rollover crash occurred in Brentwood. This incident left the driver stuck in an upside-down vehicle. Thankfully, he was safely extricated from the car with only minor wounds. For the full report, continue reading below.

Car Runs Off Marsh Creek Road

The car was traveling west down Marsh Creek Road when it crossed over into the approaching traffic lane before striking a utility pole at the driver’s side door. Upon impact, the utility pole was sheared completely off at the base. The vehicle that crashed into the utility pole, a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, ran off the road and over a small drainage ditch before finally rolling and landing upside-down in a nearby orchard.

Medical Response

The car accident was first reported about a quarter past 8:00 a.m. The first emergency responders to the site of the rollover accident were members of East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD). Craig Auzenne, ECCFPD Interim Battalion Chief, mentioned that upon his team’s arrival, the Corvette was laying upside down along the waterway. He said that bystanders had gathered around in an attempt to open the car doors and remove the driver.

Bystanders Dan Davis and Jon Mor were alerted to the situation by another man named Cleo Martinez, who had discovered the driver trapped in his wrecked car. The driver was allegedly hanging from the grip of the seat belt. Together, these bystanders attempted to extract the driver but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Emergency Response Team Successfully Extricated Driver

The CAL FIRE Engine 1666 arrived at the site, in addition to EECFPD Engine 52. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers also stopped by the scene. Once there, crews initiated rescue operations which were confronted by challenges due to a variety of contributing factors.

Chief Auzenne explained that there were some complications in removing the motorist from his car, due to the nature of its landing. The fiberglass constructed into the vehicle also presented some difficulties. He said striking the pole caused an intrusion into the driver’s door about four feet in length, which meant that typical extrication equipment would not suffice in removing the man from the Corvette.

The extrication process took a little over half an hour, although the driver spent over an hour trapped in the Corvette. The male driver seemed to be in moderately decent physical and mental condition as he was brought into an ambulance for transportation to the John Muir Medical Center of Walnut Creek. A helicopter was rushed to the crash site upon the report of this serious accident, however, it was decided by paramedics that being flown to the medical center would not be necessary.

Thankfully, the driver’s injuries following the accident were minor. As of right now, the origin of the crash is unknown and currently under investigation.
