Single-Vehicle Accident at Rio Linda Intersection Causes Fatality

A rollover accident fatality was reported in Rio Linda on December 22 in a single-vehicle collision. The crash occurred at the intersection of Rio Linda and Marysville boulevards around 9:44 a.m. The incident report filed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the overturned vehicle was discovered on the right-hand side of the intersection about 75 feet off the roadway in a muddy area.

Rollover Accident Fatality Being Investigated

The vehicle ended up on its roof following the collision. Officers with the Sacramento Police Department arrived also as well as the Sacramento County Coroner. The individual inside the vehicle was declared deceased by the coroner. The name of that individual has not been released pending notification of the family. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the rollover accident fatality.

Causes of Rollover Accidents

A rollover accident often causes serious injuries or fatalities. Although rollovers often result from driver error such as speeding, distracted driving or for other reasons, not all are the fault of the driver. Sometimes, a rollover accident fatality is due to an influence from the outside such as:

  • A mechanical defect in the vehicle can cause a rollover accident fatality. From faulty brakes to problems with the steering or the accelerator, defects of these types can cause the driver to lose control of their vehicle and crash. The manufacturer may be held liable for wrongful death by filing an auto product liability claim.
  • Poor roadway maintenance can result in a rollover accident fatality. Problems that can lead to a crash include potholes, missing or obscured signage or even bad design of an intersection. In these cases, the government entity in charge of maintenance and design may be held responsible.
  • Another driver can cause a rollover accident fatality and then flee the scene. A hit-and-run or aggressive driver can cause another motorist to have a collision. Our investigators can determine if another driver was the cause and locate that motorist in many cases, so they can be held responsible for the rollover accident fatality.

Complications in a Rollover Accident

Some vehicles are more prone to rollovers than others such as SUVs, light trucks and vans because they are top-heavy. However, an additional concern is the risk of roof crush. Although manufacturers are supposed to construct vehicles that can hold up to 3.5 times their weight if they experience a rollover, not all of them do. This is one of the reasons it is so important to retain the vehicle following a rollover. Because roof crush lowers the survivability space inside a vehicle, those inside often suffer traumatic brain injuries, and a rollover accident fatality is more common.

Filing a Wrongful Death Claim

When families lose a loved one, they often face high financial losses such as the funeral and burial expenses, lost wages if the decedent contributed to the family’s income and more. By filing a wrongful death claim, the family can recover those losses with the help of an injury lawyer. Although it does not ease the grief and pain they feel because of the death of their family member, it can help them financially and bring them justice and closure.
