Dangerous Intersections in Redding

Redding is the largest Californian city north of Sacramento, and, as such, it’s the site of a fair amount of both local and commuting vehicle traffic. Although traffic is a sign of a bustling city with lots of energy, it also comes along with the ever-present risk of serious auto accidents. It’s impossible to say exactly when or where a crash is going to happen, but there are steps that drivers, pedestrians, and other roadway users can take to improve their safety while out and about. One of the best ways to stay safe is to familiarize yourself with the areas in your city that are more dangerous than others. To learn more, take a look at this data on Redding’s most dangerous intersections.

Intersections Ranked

Data from UC Berkeley research shows that, between the beginning of 2007 and the end of 2018, there were 5,313 car accidents that caused either death or injury in the city of Redding. Out of these 5,313 crashes, 546 happened within 250 feet of the city’s top ten most dangerous intersections. That means that these ten intersections were the location of more than ten percent of injury-causing crashes in Redding.

The following intersections are listed from most to least accidents, with the total number of collisions during the years in question listed next to them:

  • Cypress Avenue and Hilltop Drive, 65
  • Canby Road and Cypress Avenue at Churn Creek Road, 65
  • Churn Creek Road and Hartnell Avenue, 62
  • Market Pine Alley and Shasta Street, 60
  • Bechelli Lane and Cypress Avenue, 57
  • Pine East Street Alley and Placer Street, 54
  • Lake Boulevard and Market Street, 48
  • Pine Street and Shasta Street, 46
  • Churn Creek Road and Dana Drive, 45
  • Bonnyview Road and Market Street, 44

What Makes These Intersections Dangerous?

Intersections can be dangerous for a number of reasons. However, collisions typically happen more often at intersections because traffic directions are multiplied, meaning drivers need to be aware of vehicles coming from more than two directions. This means that other accident factors like distracted driving, speeding, or DUI can become even more dangerous at these locations.

However, some intersections are more dangerous than others. In some cases, this is simply because the intersection has a lot of traffic, and therefore more chances for accidents to happen. In others, the intersection may have design flaws or defects that make it difficult for drivers to safely navigate. Intersections with low visibility, missing signage, large potholes, or a lack of turn lanes can easily contribute to dangerous crashes.

Dangerous Roads and Government Liability

When an intersection or other portion of the road isn’t safe, the government body responsible for it may be financially liable for damages in the event of a crash. Injured parties are often able to obtain payments for their medical expenses and other losses by filing personal injury claims against city or state entities that fail to ensure roadway safety. However, these claims need to be filed in a shorter timeframe than others. If you have questions about obtaining compensation for an accident, you should get in touch with a Redding personal injury lawyer to get individual advice.
