SONORA, CA — Tragically, a 57-year-old Oakdale resident was killed when the Chevrolet Silverado he was driving veered off La Grange Road and slammed into a metal pole and a tree.

The fatal crash happened sometime late Saturday night, August 22, or in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 23, on La Grange Road, on the south side of Avenida Lugo North. According to the California Highway Patrol, the Silverado was traveling at an unknown speed when the driver failed to navigate a curve and lost control, sending the vehicle off the roadway.

Sonora Area highway patrol officers were notified of the crash at approximately 11:19 a.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they learned the driver had suffered fatal injuries.

The man was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred. Authorities have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.

The driver’s name is being withheld while authorities notify his next of kin.

SONORA, CA – Three people, including a Cal Fire firefighter, were hurt Sunday afternoon at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, in Sonora, when a Cal Fire law enforcement truck arriving to deal with a structure fire collided with two other vehicles also on Stockton Road, opposite the Mother Lode Fairgrounds.

The collision was reported at according to a California Highway Patrol news release. At the time, the Cal Fire vehicle was traveling south on Stockton Road with its emergency lights and siren activated.

Sonora resident Lori Cook, age 71, was operating a new-model Subaru Crosstrek. She stopped at the intersection of Fairview Lane and Stockton Road, and then entered directly into the path of the approaching emergency vehicle.

The Cal Fire pickup struck the front of Cook’s Subaru. The impact sent the emergency vehicle continuing south, where it then collided with a third vehicle stopped in the lefthand turn lane from Stockton Road onto Fairview Lane.

The third vehicle was a 2011 Honda Pilot driven by 30-year-old Daenara Watson, also of Sonora.

Fraser and Watson suffered minor injuries and were treated by medical personnel at the scene. Cook also sustained injuries that the CHP described as minor, but she was transported by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for further treatment.

Fortunately, everyone involved was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The CHP also reported that alcohol and drugs were not suspected as factors in the collision.

The crash remains a reminder that when an emergency vehicle comes through an intersection with lights and sirens blazing, drivers need to stay alert—and give emergency responders plenty of room to get where they are going.
