Redding Forest Service Crew Injured in Head-On Accident

A truck that had been carrying 10 Redding area U.S. Forest Service hotshot crew members was involved in a serious crash during the afternoon of Tuesday, April 30, 2019. California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the head-on collision took place on a highway location just west of the community of Burney and left multiple people with injuries including three with severe trauma. Altogether, eleven people sustained trauma during the crash. The accident remains under investigation by CHP.

Crash Information

The Forest Service truck had been driving on Highway 299 heading west at around 4:45 p.m. At the same time, a 1996 Lexus was traveling east on Highway 299. The Lexus drifted over the double yellow line and into oncoming traffic, entering the truck’s direct path. The two vehicles crashed head-on. According to reports, the collision caused the truck to roll over. The truck eventually came to a stop on a nearby embankment.

Response and Injuries

Emergency responders who tended to the accident scene reported that two passengers of the Forest Service truck, as well as the driver of the Lexus, suffered major injuries. The severely injured Forest Service crew members were identified as two 31-year-old and 28-year-old men. The Lexus driver was identified as a 66-year-old woman from McArthur. The woman was transported to the Redding Mercy Medical Center along with one of the crew members. The other man was transported to the Shasta Regional Medical Center.

The remaining eight occupants of the Forest Service truck were all transported to local hospitals. Medical officials said that the eight individuals all suffered minor injuries. They were identified as two women and six men between the ages of 25 and 36 years old.

As CHP investigates this collision, officers have asked for help from possible witnesses or anybody who may have relevant info about the incident. Callers who believe they can help police with their investigation are asked to contact CHP at (530) 225-0500.

Crashes Involving a Government Entity

When people are injured during car accidents, they can often claim payments from negligent parties to help them recover personally and financially. However, with accidents that involve a government entity, the process for filing an injury claim is different. With standard injury cases, injured parties are typically able to file a claim for two years after the date of the accident. However, with government entity accidents, this time frame is much shorter. People who have been injured in accidents involving government entities are required to report their accident and file their claim within six months of the crash. While this regulation exists to notify governments about safety issues, it can make it more difficult for injured individuals to receive the recompense they deserve. For this reason, it is essential to contact a Redding car accident lawyer right away.
