Pedestrian Injured in South Lake Tahoe Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a South Lake Tahoe car accident lawyer. An area collision that occurred in the early morning on Thursday, February 15, 2018, left an elderly pedestrian with an injury requiring hospital care.

Collision Information

Officers of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) indicated in reports that the accident occurred at 7:50 a.m. at the intersection of Tahoe Keys Boulevard and Venice Drive. Reports indicate that a 16-year-old driver who was operating a vehicle without a license struck a 94-year-old male, knocking him over.

Response

SLPD, JPA ambulance, and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLFR) all aided in responding to this incident. The pedestrian was found at the accident scene with a head injury and was put on a stretcher before being placed in an ambulance and taken to the Barton Hospital to receive medical care.

No updates regarding the man’s condition or the severity of his injuries have been reported by medical officials as of yet.

Investigation

Full investigation reports of this incident are not currently available. However, SLTPD officer Lt. Shannon Laney reported that SLTPD has determined that the driver is at fault for the accident.

Whether or not the driver ignored a traffic light, was intoxicated, or had been distracted by a mobile phone are factors that remain under investigation.

Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians can suffer serious injuries in vehicle accidents, even when vehicles are traveling at relatively low speeds. Common injuries sustained by pedestrians in vehicle accidents include leg fractures from the impact of car bumpers and brain injuries caused by being knocked forcefully to the ground.

Elderly pedestrians are especially vulnerable and frequently suffer serious pelvic fractures and other injuries when they are struck by vehicles. Due to various factors including issues with sensory information, general physical deterioration, and response times, the elderly are both more at risk and more threatened by pedestrian accidents than most. Staying Safe

Drivers and pedestrians both have a responsibility to navigate roadways responsibly. In order to avoid accidents, there are things that drivers and pedestrians should keep in mind.

Drivers should always keep their eyes on the road and expect pedestrians in high-traffic areas like intersections and crosswalks. While in residential areas, school zones, or places with lots of pedestrians such as downtown areas and near parks, drivers should slow down and pay extra attention.

Pedestrians should always walk predictably. Walking in a manner that drivers can anticipate increases their ability to avoid you and, if necessary, make avoidance maneuvers. Pedestrians can also wear bright clothing with reflective surfaces to ensure that drivers can easily see them in poor lighting conditions like inclement weather or during low-light hours.
