Unknown Vehicle and Tractor-Trailer Cause Pedestrian Fatality

The pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, which continued on without stopping. The woman then fell onto the road, and a tractor-trailer struck her. She was declared dead after the arrival of first responders with the Sacramento Fire Department. The tractor-trailer driver, a Sacramento man, age 68, remained at the accident scene and was cooperating with the investigation being conducted by authorities.

Hit-and-Run Accidents in Sacramento

Hit-and-run accidents in Sacramento are becoming more common than ever. This behavior emanates from a variety of reasons. However, there is no excuse for leaving the scene of an accident under the law except for emergency transportation of an injured person to the hospital or if the driver cannot safely stop at the accident scene. However, they are expected to stop as soon as possible. Penalties for a hit-and-run accident resulting in injuries or fatalities are severe and can be charged as a felony.

Some of the Reasons Hit-and-Run Accidents Happen

Following are some of the reasons hit-and-run accidents occur:

  • The driver is inebriated and doesn’t want to be caught.
  • The driver lacks a license to operate a vehicle or registration.
  • The driver has drug paraphernalia or drugs in the vehicle.
  • The driver panics and runs away from the crash.
  • The vehicle is stolen, and the driver doesn’t want to be apprehended.

Losing a Loved One in a Hit-and-Run Crash

There is nothing worse than finding out that a loved one has died suddenly. The family’s sense of equilibrium is torn apart, and they are caught in a web of anger, grief, and other emotions. Often, family members seek help from close friends, clergy, or medical professionals. There are things you can do to help with their pain and show your support.

  • Bring a precooked meal or carry out food to the family home.
  • Offer to do chores around the house such as walk the dog, pick up children from school or mow the lawn.
  • Let the family know you are available to pick up groceries or prescriptions from the pharmacy.
  • Tell family members that you can accompany them to make end-of-life arrangements.
  • Continue to stay in touch after the funeral and burial services are over.

Investigating a Pedestrian Fatality in a Wrongful Death Claim

Like any other personal injury, wrongful death claims require supporting evidence to prove that the at-fault driver was negligent. Our office secures this evidence by sending our investigative team to the scene of the accident. Once they arrive, they interview witnesses who saw the accident happen and obtain video footage of the pedestrian fatality from surveillance cameras and other sources.

Our investigators also use accident reconstruction to determine liability as well as review police reports for inaccuracies. Once all this data is amassed, our investigative team hands it over to our injury attorneys, who use it in forming a strong wrongful death claim.
