Biker Suffers Serious Injuries in Ojai Motorcycle Accident

I’m Ed Smith, an Ojai Motorcycle Accident Lawyer. An accident on March 18, 2017, along the Ojai-Santa Paula Road involving a motorcycle collision with a motor vehicle resulted in serious injuries to the rider.

What Happened

The incident occurred about 5:55 p.m. near the turn for Sulphur Mountain Road when the rider of a Honda CBR 600 motorcycle slammed into the rear of a Land Rover. Both vehicles were traveling west, heading toward the town of Ojai. A police officer with the California Highway patrol reported that the 19-year-old motorcycle rider, a resident of Oxnard, was thrown from his bike and sustained serious injuries. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office dispatched an air squadron unit to transport the injured man to a local hospital for treatment.

Ongoing Investigation

No further information on the accident is available at this time. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the CHP.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycle injuries are often serious and can result in brain injuries, bone fractures or other serious consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle riders are six times more likely to be injured in a crash with a motor vehicle and 27 time more likely to die than a motor vehicle passenger. While using protective clothing, including a helmet, following the rules of the road, not riding while impaired and properly maintaining your motorcycle can shift the odds in a motorcyclist’s favor, accidents do happen.

In 2015, the number of injuries from motorcycle accidents decreased 4.3 percent from 92,000 the previous year to 88,000, according to NHTSA. However, the number of fatalities increased by 8.3 percent over the previous year. Education, not only for motorcycle riders but for drivers of cars, trucks and other motor vehicles that share the road, is important to make the roads safer for everyone.

Motorcycle accidents can cause devastating injuries due to the lack of protection for the rider when compared to a motor vehicle, even when the rider is wearing protective gear and taking all possible precautions. When the motorcycle accident is due to negligence on the part of the other driver, it can result in serious injuries, compounded by medical bills, time off from work and other expenses.
