Grab Your Fork – It’s November!

It’s the beginning of the month again, and we always like to take this time to highlight the food-focused “National Days” coming up on the November days ahead.

  • November 5: National Donut Day.  The Pushkin’s people have done it again.  Babes Ice Cream & Donuts near 24th and J features 100% vegan, 100% gluten-free, and 100% delicious sweet treats.  This month’s donut flavors are Chocolate Sprinkles, S’Mores, Pomegranate Earl Grey, Cookies & Cream, Maple “Bacon,” Cinnamon Sugar, French Vanilla Cruller, Carrot Donut Hole, and Apple Fritter.
  • November 6: National Nachos Day.  Now that we know this exists, it is our new favorite day.  Homemade sheet pan nachos are pretty simple to make. Try this recipe.
  • November 7: National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day.  This oddly specific day can be celebrated with Montezuma’s Dark Chocolate Absolute Black with Almonds.  I mean, since this is a National Day, you may as well go all the way, but be warned.  This bar is not sweet, as there is no sugar.  It is an intensely bitter dark chocolate and is available at Trader Joe’s.
  • November 8: National Harvey Wallbanger Day.  A Harvey Wallbanger is a cocktail.  It consists of three parts vodka to one part Galliano to six parts fresh orange juice.  It is served on the rocks in a highball.  Galliano is a sweet Italian liqueur.  A highball is a glass that holds 8 to 12 ounces.  Thank you, Google.
  • November 9: National Scrapple Day.  According to Wikipedia, scrapple is a mush of leftover pork scraps and trimmings combined with some flour and spices and formed into a congealed loaf, which is then pan-fried.  We are choosing not to celebrate National Scrapple Day.
  • November 11 is Veterans Day and National Sundae Day.  Take your favorite vet out to Gunther’s for a “thank you for your service” treat.
  • November 14: National Pickle DayBubbies pickles are the best!  They are a naturally fermented, raw food, probiotic goodness with complete amino acids.  They cost a bit more, but they are worth it.  Available at most grocery stores, including Raley’s and Sprouts.
  • November 16: National Fast Food Day.  Isn’t that every day?  For real, though, Sacramento has all the usual options for fast food.  Shake Shack on R Street is the latest national chain to enter our area, so if you haven’t tested how they rate next to In-n-Out and Five Guys, it’s a good day to grab a burger and join the hot debate.
  • November 17: National Homemade Bread Day.  Oh, how wonderful it would be if someone would make us homemade bread for this special day.  Instead, we will try to get to Grateful Bread early before they run out of sourdough batards!
  • November 19: National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day.  Another oddly specific designation and another chance to debate – what’s your poison? Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew?
  • November 21: National Gingerbread Cookie Day.  Recipe here.  Who says you can’t catch the Gingerbread Man?  (Watch the YouTube video below if you don’t understand that reference.)

  • November 24: National Sardines Day.  Pass.
  • November 25: Tie One On Day.  This day sounds fun.  Or problematic.  Our guess is that it is dedicated to the college students who come home for the holiday break and meet up with their old friends to celebrate.  With beer.  If you observe this holiday, please don’t drink and drive, and please don’t be hungover for your mom’s turkey tomorrow!
  • November 26 – Thanksgiving Day.  You know what to do.  Don’t forget these.

For the rest of the month, we will be on cruise control with leftovers.  Eleven more months before we want to eat turkey again!
