JUMP Scooters to Increase in Sacramento

JUMP electric scooters and bikes may become a more common sight in the Sacramento area. According to Uber, the company that operates JUMP has obtained a new permit for Sacramento and is expanding the number of scooters and bikes to 1,170. They currently rent 620 of these vehicles in the city. Every three months, they are expecting to increase this number by adding 250 more vehicles.

Coverage Expanding for Rentals

The JUMP bikes have proved to be popular with local residents. Introduced back in February, around 100 of the bikes were available. The company’s license was originally valid for a year. Then Uber decided to expand. Now other companies are trying to obtain a license. Because of the great climate in Sacramento, large expanses of flat areas and convenience, some locals are leaving their vehicles at home and using these bikes instead. It’s not only good exercise but saves on gas and is helpful for the economy, according to one user.

Rules for Sacramento JUMP Bike Users

When electric scooters first appeared on the Sacramento scene, there were a few problems to solve. One was with people riding them on sidewalks. Another was with riders leaving them in random locations that might end up injuring others. However, the rules in Sacramento are that an electric bike or scooter user is required to either use a bike lane or street to travel. They also have to be parked at designated spots or racks.

California Electric Scooter Laws

California laws that address electric scooters say:

  • The rider must have a permit or driver’s license.
  • Riders may not go in the street if the speed limit is more than 25 mph. At speed limits above that, the rider must stay in the bike lane.
  • When a scooter rider is crossing a street, they must walk it across the crosswalk.
  • One hand must be on the handlebars at all times.
  • Alcohol and drug use while riding on an electric scooter is forbidden.
  • Passengers are not allowed on an e-scooter.

Injuries in a Jump Accident

The nature of the injury depends on who is injured. Naturally, the person using the Jump vehicle may incur injuries. This may be due to their own recklessness or a defect or poorly maintained scooter. Defects are the responsibility of the company that made the scooter. Pedestrians are also injured in scooter accidents. Some of the common injuries include:

If the scooter cuts into traffic when operating on the street, serious motor vehicle accidents can also occur as drivers react. This can result in multiple vehicle accidents, hit from behind crashes or sideswipe collisions.

Electric Scooter or Bike Accidents

If you are injured in an accident involving an e-scooter or bike, you may obtain compensation for your injuries if they were caused by someone else’s negligence. This is true for a pedestrian who falls over a haphazardly parked scooter or a rider who is using the sidewalk when a bike lane can be used. An injury attorney will be able to investigate the accident, looking for the reason it happened. He or she will check out the scene of the crash to see if bike lanes were available or if the rider chose to ride on the sidewalk illegally. The city is obligated to provide parking areas for the vehicles. Once the logistics are understood, the attorney may file a claim against the rider or the city for not providing parking or bike lanes when possible.
