Getting Through the Grief Process

If you’ve lost someone special in your life, grief is a normal process to go through. You may feel various emotions, such as sadness, loneliness, or depression. It’s essential to allow your grief process to unfold naturally.

The grief process depends on several factors, like age, beliefs, personality, and support system. If you are feeling deep, emotional pain, it may be tempting to turn to drugs and alcohol to numb your pain. However, these are only temporary solutions and will not make you feel better or heal any faster. They can lead to dangerous addictions and emotional breakdowns. Instead, consider doing healthy activities that can help you come to terms with your loss.

Healthy Activities

While you are going through the grief process, doing the types of activities below can assist you in your journey of healing and growth.

  • Take Care of Yourself – grief can take a toll on your well-being. Eat well, go for a walk, or do other forms of exercise, and get plenty of rest. You need to stay healthy to get through the grief process.
  • Be Emotional – let yourself cry. Crying releases tension and sorrow.
  • Reach Out to Others –even though you need time to yourself, it’s important to reach out to family and friends. Find those who you trust and respect and share your feelings with them.
  • Write Notes – write some notes to the person you lost. In the letters, express your feelings and what you are going through. The goal is to allow yourself to say what’s in your heart.
  • Hold on to Personal Belongings – take your time with your loved one’s personal belongings. You don’t need to sort through them until you’re ready.
  • Treasure Memories – put together a photo collage or mementos for a scrapbook. Share and record stories of your special person with family and friends. Do anything that can help you create lasting memories that you can treasure for years to come.
  • Explore Your Spirituality – in times of sorrow, meditation, prayer, and inspirational reading, can help provide enlightenment and comfort as you cope with your loss. Open yourself up to the inner guidance and listen to your heart and soul.
  • Add New Life to Your Environment – surround yourself with new life, such as a plant, a goldfish, a kitten, or a puppy.
  • Honor Your Loved One – do something that would be meaningful to your loved one. Contribute to a program that your special person supported, volunteer at a charity that your loved one believed in. Do something that will help you remember your loved one’s life and memory.
  • Be Adventurous – Once you have given yourself some time to grieve, consider making a fresh start. Think of all the things you’ve always wanted to do. Start a new hobby, explore new places and ideas. Meet new people. Whatever you desire, dream big, and follow your heart.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you’re unable to accept the loss and your grief doesn’t get better, you may want to see a grief counselor who can help you explore your emotions. A therapist can teach you coping skills to help you manage grief.

If you are depressed, you may want to talk to a doctor who can prescribe medications to help your depression. You should also see a doctor if you are:

  • Having trouble keeping up with your daily activities such as cleaning the house or going to work.
  • Having thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself.
  • Blaming yourself for the death of your loved one.
