Free Electric Tricycle Rentals for Sacramento Library Cardholders

Beyond books, board games, video games, and movies, a broader range of items are available for library borrowing. Individuals aged 18 and above, holding an active Sacramento library card, can freely rent an electric tricycle for up to three weeks. This initiative is part of the city of Sacramento’s fresh pilot lending program.

New Eco-Friendly Transportation

It is being made possible through a collaboration between Colonial Heights Library and the city. According to Rachel Patten, the city’s sustainability analyst, this new eco-friendly transportation option contributes to the community.

The inventory comprises five electric tricycles, each equipped with cargo baskets, and there are prospects for the city to broaden this initiative. There is a possibility of introducing more vehicles and extending similar lending programs to various libraries throughout Sacramento.

How to Check Out the E-Trikes

Upon borrowing a tricycle from Colonial Heights Library’s service desk, you will receive a set of keys, a lock, a battery, a charger, and a weather protection cover. The Sacramento Public Library offers comprehensive guidance on charging, operating, and securing electric tricycles.

When you are done with the tricycle, you must return the vehicle and all provided equipment to the location where you initially checked them out.

About Electric Tricycles

Electric tricycles, often called e-trikes or electric trikes, have three wheels powered by electric motors. They are designed to provide a convenient and efficient mode of transportation, particularly for shorter distances and urban environments. Here are some critical points about electric tricycles:

  • Design and Structure: Electric tricycles feature a stable and balanced three-wheel design. They typically have a single wheel in the front and two wheels at the back, which provides stability and ease of maneuverability.
  • Electric Motor: The electric motor is the primary source of propulsion for e-trikes. It is powered by a rechargeable battery pack that supplies electricity to the motor, allowing the tricycle to move without pedaling.
  • Pedal-Assist and Throttle: Electric tricycles can be equipped with pedal-assist systems, which provide motor assistance when the rider pedals. Additionally, some models have throttle controls that allow the rider to control the speed using a twist grip or thumb lever, similar to a scooter.
  • Range: The range of an electric tricycle refers to the distance it can travel on a single battery charge. This can vary widely depending on motor power, terrain, battery capacity, rider weight, and speed. Generally, e-trikes range around 20 to 50 miles on a single charge.
  • Cargo Capacity: Many electric tricycles come with cargo baskets or compartments, making them suitable for carrying groceries, packages, and other items. This feature adds to their practicality for errands and short trips.
  • Comfort and Stability: Electric tricycles are known for their stability, making them suitable for riders of different ages and physical abilities. The seating position is often more upright, providing a comfortable and ergonomic riding experience.
  • Sustainability: E-trikes contribute to sustainable transportation by reducing carbon emissions and decreasing the reliance on fossil fuels. They can be a greener alternative to traditional gas-powered vehicles for short trips.
  • Regulations and Licensing: Regulations for electric tricycles vary by location. In some places, e-trikes are considered bicycles and don’t require a driver’s license or registration, while in others, they might be subject to specific rules for electric vehicles.
  • Charging: Charging an electric tricycle’s battery is as simple as plugging it into a regular electrical outlet. Charging times fluctuate based on the battery’s capacity and the charger’s specifications.
  • Cost: The cost of electric tricycles can vary widely depending on factors such as brand, features, motor power, battery capacity, and build quality.

Electric tricycles cater to a diverse range of riders, including those seeking a comfortable and stable way to get around without requiring extensive pedaling or balancing skills.
