Fairfield Fatal Tree Collision
I’m Ed Smith, a Fairfield personal injury lawyer. On Tuesday, August 22, 2017, a collision between a vehicle and a tree in Fairfield led to the tragic death of one individual.
Accident Information
California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer David Harvey spoke about the accident in a press release Tuesday morning. Harvey indicated that the collision occurred at about 1:20 a.m. on the off-ramp for Pittman Road on Highway Interstate 80 on the western edge of Fairfield.
Harvey said that a 47-year-old woman from Fairfield had been driving her 2002 Volvo S60 at an unknown speed when she entered the ramp. While she was driving through the ramp, Harvey indicated, she made an unsafe turning maneuver and veered off of the roadway as a result. After exiting the roadway, her vehicle traveled a short distance before colliding with a tree on the side of the highway.
A Fatal Crash
When emergency responders arrived at the site of the crash, they found that the woman had sustained fatal injuries when her car struck the tree and declared her deceased at the scene.
The woman’s identity has not yet been released pending her next of kin’s notification.

Investigation
CHP has been working to identify the factors that caused this tragic accident to happen. Although the Pittman Road off ramp was closed for several hours while officers investigated the site, they are still unsure of why the woman made the unsafe turn that led to her fatal crash.
Officers are also attempting to determine if alcohol or a medical emergency played a role in this accident.

Officer Harvey said in his press statement that CHP would like anyone with information they think may be pertinent to the collision investigation to call their non-emergency phone number 800-TELL-CHP. Harvey added that callers should ask for investigating officer Link who is handling this collision. And that CHP would be grateful to receive any relevant information you may have.
Single-Vehicle Run-Off-Road Collisions
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are several factors related to accidents in which a single driver leaves the roadway. Speeding is one of them. NHTSA’s data shows that vehicles involved in ROR crashes are nearly twice as likely to have been speeding than not.
Another factor related to ROR crashes is curved roadways. 90 percent of single vehicle collisions on curved roads involve the vehicle leaving the roadway. With straight roads, single vehicle crashes only go off-road 62 percent of the time.
