Enjoy the Ides of March in Sacramento

Mid-March Weekend Fun

Yes, the more commonly known phrase is “Beware the Ides of March,” which was penned by William Shakespeare and uttered by a prophet to warn Julius Caesar of his impending doom.  But that’s so dark!  There are so many events to enjoy during March in Sacramento, so rather than beware, we say…prepare…for a good time!

24th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade

On Saturday, March 14, 2020, beginning at 11:00 a.m., hundreds of marchers clothed in green will fill the streets of Old Sacramento.  They will be joined by Irish and Scottish dancers, historical actors, bagpipe players, drummers, and a host of representatives from cultural organizations.  This year’s grand marshal is City Councilman Steve Hanson.

The parade winds through the Old Sacramento Waterfront area.  The boardwalks at Front Street, L Street, 2nd Street, and J Street offer some of the best views, so get there early to claim your space.

Following the parade, a live band will perform at K & 2nd streets.  There will also be a beer garden in that area. While you are in the district, take advantage of the many delicious restaurants and interesting retail establishments.

Parking is available at 274 I Street in the Old Sacramento Garage, or you can park at the Macy’s garage on L street and walk through the tunnel.

Second Saturday

After enjoying the St. Patrick’s day parade, head to midtown to take in Second Saturday, which is a celebration of the performing, culinary, visual, musical, and dramatic arts.  There is so much to choose from, for more information about this monthly event and what March features, we suggest you check out the Second Saturday website for more details.

Shamrock’n Road Race

This popular event now spans two days. The race starts and ends at Sutter Health Park (formerly Raley Field).  It’s fun to finish your run by heading into the stadium and listening to (or pretending to hear) the crowd’s cheers.

On Saturday, March 14, the 5 kilometer, 10 kilometer, and Kids’1/2 Mile events are held.  The schedule for Saturday is:

  • 6:45 am – Pick up your packet or same-day register at Sutter Health Park
  • 8:00 am –  Leprechaun Dash 1/2 mile start – (this race is for ages 12 and under only)
  • 8:15 am – 5K start
  • 9:00 am– 10k start

Sunday, March 15, 2020, is when the larger event is held.  The half-marathon has been a popular draw for Sacramento runners, walkers, and health-conscious partiers for years.  Most entrants get into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit and dress in vibrant green costumes. Tutus, glitter, and four-leaf clovers abound.  Because the race is so popular, start times are organized in waves according to each participant’s anticipated pace.

Sunday Schedule:

6:30 a.m. – packet pick up at Sutter Health Park (no registration on race day available)

Wave start times

Wave One: 7:45 a.m.
Wave Two: 8:00 a.m.
Wave Three: 8:15 a.m.

The time limit for the closed course is four hours from the beginning of Wave 3.  Roads will open to vehicle traffic at 12:30 p.m.
