Carmichael Pedestrian Fatality Involves Elderly Woman

A Carmichael pedestrian fatality occurred on March 22 when two older women taking a walk in a residential neighborhood were struck by a vehicle that drifted off the road. The women, both 72-years-old, were walking along the shoulder of Arden Way, close to McClaren Drive, at around 9:30 in the morning when the tragedy occurred. One of the women died at the accident site, while the other suffered major injuries.

Driver Remains at Accident Scene

The driver remained at the scene of the Carmichael pedestrian fatality and was identified as a female, age 16. She cooperated with police authorities, and according to the California Highway Patrol, neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash.

Pedestrian Deaths

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that a pedestrian dies every two hours. In 2018, 6,227 pedestrians died in traffic accidents. This reflects a rise of 250 people since 2017. Since 2008, the number of pedestrian fatalities has increased by 41 percent. It is important to understand why this is happening. Some reasons are:

  • Speeding: The faster a vehicle is going when it strikes a pedestrian, the greater the likelihood the walker will suffer serious injuries or be killed. Many cities have lowered the speed limit to keep this from happening.
  • Large vehicle: The number of large vehicles such as SUVs and pickup trucks on the road is increasing every year. It is more difficult for the driver of a large vehicle to see a pedestrian, and it is more likely that the impact will cause a fatality. The number of pedestrian fatalities caused by big vehicles has risen by 50 percent.
  • Distraction: Distracted drivers and pedestrians are responsible for accidents. This behavior usually centers on texting, talking on the phone or listening to music. Pedestrians who are using earbuds are more likely not to hear a vehicle approaching.

Recovering Damages Following a Carmichael Pedestrian Fatality

The heartbreak of wrongful death is that the accident would never have happened if an individual or entity wasn’t negligent. The saddest part is that family members are not given the opportunity to say their goodbyes. A Carmichael pedestrian fatality caused by negligence leaves the family burdened with funeral and burial costs, as well as other financial losses. However, family members may place a financial claim to recover those expenses. Although it will do nothing to alleviate their grief, at least it does not add to their financial burden.
