Traffic Safety Enforcement Grant

Brentwood drivers might be seeing a heavier patrol officer presence to ensure traffic law enforcement, thanks to the grant that was recently awarded to the Brentwood Police Department. The California Office of Traffic Safety approved a $70,000 grant to Brentwood police for a one-year public awareness and enforcement program. This grant is intent on deterring motorists from violating traffic laws and other unsafe driving habits.

Tom Hansen, Police Chief of Brentwood, stated that Brentwood police care deeply about the existing traffic concerns in the community and the way they impact the quality of life for Brentwood citizens. They are currently working to properly address these concerns through educational and enforcement measures with the help of the OTS grant. The grant is going to fund various traffic programs during the 2018-2019 federal fiscal year, which goes until September 30, 2019.

OTS Grant Intended to Reduce Collisions and Increase Road Safety

Mark Louwerens, Traffic Safety Sgt. stated that the grant’s focus is mainly enforcement of traffic lights, speed, drunk driving, stop signs, distracted driving, pedestrian safety, and seat belt laws intended to prevent collisions. Additionally, Loewerens said the grant would aid in community education by installing DUI checkpoints at specific times of the year, such as the ongoing holiday season. The checkpoints and saturation patrols hope to extract suspected drug or alcohol-impaired drivers, as well as anyone without a valid license off the road. Meanwhile, police will go through extensive training to identify and apprehend motorists breaking the law.

Louwerens said that the city police, engineering department, and other city staff are working together to reduce traffic concerns with the help of traffic enforcement, engineering, and public education/awareness. A portion of the money from the grant will be funding traffic safety education presentations geared towards all members within the community. Police participate in safety presentations given at local high schools throughout the year, in addition to the Safe Schools Symposium, a recent partnership with the Brentwood police. They also provide similar traffic presentations to the elderly.

California Traffic Accident Statistics

Reports from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that 3,623 people died in car crashes in California during 2016, a surprising 7 percent increase from the previous year. Officials from the Office of Traffic Safety also noted that there has been an increase in pedestrian deaths. About 867 pedestrians lost their lives on California roadways during 2016, almost a 33 percent increase compared to 2012. Nearly all accidents are avoidable, according to Rhonda Craft, Office of Traffic Safety director. She further stated that enforcement and education go hand-in-hand helping change unsafe behaviors that lead to auto accidents.
