LODI, CA — Authorities are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred near Lodi.
Early Monday morning, July 13, a 51-year-old man from Lodi lost his life in a head-on crash along Highway 12. According to the California Highway Patrol, the other driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and manslaughter.
The identity of the Lodi man has not yet been released as officials work to notify his family.
Investigators with CHP said the collision happened when a gray Honda, driven by a 31-year-old man from North Highlands, was traveling westbound on Highway 12 and attempted to pass a big rig near the Guard Road intersection, just west of Interstate 5. Witnesses reported that the Honda crossed over the solid double yellow lines and struck a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by the Lodi man head-on.
The crash was reported at 5:51 a.m. Following the impact, both vehicles left the roadway, traveling south before coming to rest on the shoulder. The Chevrolet caught fire and was fully engulfed in flames.
The Lodi man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Honda driver sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, CHP said.
Following the investigation, the North Highlands man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and manslaughter. As of Tuesday, CHP had not released his identity.

STANISLAUS COUNTY, CA – Law enforcement agencies throughout Stanislaus County are responding to a growing number of crashes, public complaints and unsafe riding involving e-bikes and other two-wheel motor-powered vehicles. The increase has led to expanded enforcement efforts, public safety education and ongoing conversations about possible policy changes aimed at improving roadway safety.
Police departments in Modesto, Ceres, Turlock and other communities across the county say they have seen a noticeable rise in dangerous riding behavior in recent years, with many incidents involving juveniles.
Transportation researchers note that this trend extends far beyond Stanislaus County. They also emphasize that many accidents reported as involving “e-bikes” may actually be attributed to vehicls that do not match the state’s legal definition of an electric bicycle.
The Modesto Police Department provided the most detailed local data reflecting the growing concern. In the first 6 months of 2026 alone, the department has already investigated 34 injury collisions, including two cases of severe head-trauma. Luckily, both victims are expected to survive.
The number of e-bike crash reports rose from 18 in 2023 to 53 in 2024, representing a 194% rise.
Officials also noted that unsafe riding includes riders of traditional bicycles, with officers responding to 227 so far this year.
Under California law, an e-bike must have completely operational pedals, a motor under 750 watts, and fit within 1 of 3 classifications related to speed and motor assistance. Two-wheel vehicles lacking pedals are not typically considered to be e-bikes, but rather electric motorcycles, which come with different regulations.
Officials continue to remind consumers of an important safety message: “If it’s too fast, it’s not an e-bike.”

STOCKTON, CA – A man has been arrested for a hit-and-run collision that sadly claimed the life of a Stockton man riding a bicycle, along with his two dogs.
CHP reported that investigators placed 30-year-old Larry Page in custody after locating the vehicle believed to have been involved in the June 27 collision.
According to CHP, the crash happened at approximately 10:18 a.m. on Eight Mile Road, east of Interstate 5. The bicyclist was traveling westbound, towing a shopping cart with two dogs inside it when they were struck by a vehicle. The driver left the scene, and, tragically, the 41-year-old bicyclist and both dogs died from their injuries.
Investigators previously said they believe the victim had been deceased for approximately four to 12 hours before CHP officers discovered the crash scene near Shumway Oak Grove Regional Park.
Officers identified the suspected vehicle as a silver or light gray 2011-2015 Ford Explorer. Investigators from the CHP Stockton Area office, CHP’s Crime Suppression Team, and the Delta Regional Auto Theft Team worked together to identify the person believed to be responsible for the crash.
On July 14, investigators found the suspected vehicle, which officials report demonstrated clear signs of having been involved in a collision. The damaged vehicle was impounded, and Page was taken into custody.
Mr. Page was booked on the suspicion of two felonies, hit-and-run resulting in death or injury and vehicular manslaughter, at the San Joaquin County Jail.
The investigation remains ongoing.
