SONORA, CA — Efforts are underway to make the Highway 49 and Shaws Flat Road intersection safer for drivers, with a new four-way stop scheduled to be installed next month as an immediate safety measure while longer-term improvements are explored.

According to a Caltrans spokesperson, the intersection was identified as a traffic safety concern during a routine statewide review. Following that assessment, the Caltrans District 10 traffic safety team conducted an engineering study and determined that an all-way stop with flashing beacons would provide the most effective short-term solution to help reduce the risk of crashes. At the same time, Caltrans is preparing a report to evaluate potential long-term alternatives for the intersection.

The upcoming improvements will include “stop ahead” warning signs and pavement markings on the north and south approaches, along with new stop signs featuring “all-way” plaques and flashing beacons to alert approaching motorists.

Caltrans says the enhancements are intended to reduce both the number and severity of angle-type collisions, including broadside crashes. Research indicates that converting a two-way stop into an all-way stop with flashing beacons can reduce overall crashes by about 82 percent and fatal or injury crashes by approximately 87 percent.

Officials noted that the project is based on several years of collision data and a comprehensive engineering analysis aimed at identifying the most appropriate, research-supported approach to improving safety at the intersection.
