MODESTO, CA – On Wednesday, a heartbreaking early morning crash near the Modesto airport has left one woman dead and several others seriously injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision occurred close to 5:45 a.m. on Mitchell Road, a short way south of Tenaya Drive. CHP reports that a 53-year-old Modesto woman was driving north in a Ford SUV when, for reasons still under investigation, she deviated into the southbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2007 Cadillac SUV.
Tragically, the driver of the Ford was declared dead at the scene. Two passengers in the Ford—a 34-year-old Hughson woman and a 67-year-old Waterford man—were rushed to a nearby hospital with major injuries.
The driver of the Cadillac, a Modesto man, aged 64, suffered minor injuries and was also transported for medical care.
Authorities have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The roadway remained closed until approximately 8:15 a.m. as officials investigated and cleared the scene.

MANTECA, CA – A devastating collision on Monday morning claimed the life of a street sweeper driver after he struck the rear of a parked tractor-trailer on the southbound Highway 99 offramp onto Lathrop Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. The big rig truck was stopped on the right shoulder, safely outside the traffic lanes, when—for reasons still under investigation—the street sweeper veered off the road and collided with the back of the truck going approximately 40 mph.
Unfortunately, at the time of the crash, the street sweeper driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. He sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A person in the tractor-trailer was not injured, and authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
CHP confirmed that the street sweeper belonged to a private company, not Caltrans.

SONORA, CA – A tragic head-on crash Monday evening claimed the life of a Modesto man and left another driver injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision took place around 5:25 p.m. on State Route 49 near Sierra Rock Road, just north of Sonora. CHP investigators say the 63-year-old man was traveling southbound in a 1996 GMC Sonoma when he veered over the double yellow lines and entered the northbound lane, colliding head-on with a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado. Following the impact, the GMC caught fire. The GMC driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and was pinned inside the burning vehicle. Despite firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the flames, the man suffered fatal injuries. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Silverado driver, 70-year-old Jan Ruff of Sonora, was reportedly properly restrained, and sustained only moderate injuries in the collision. Investigators are still determining whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.

The crash occurred around 3:40 p.m. when the driver of a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage was traveling eastbound and, for reasons still under investigation, failed to navigate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2008 Ford F-250 traveling westbound.
Tragically, the driver of the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not reported any additional injuries. Independent witnesses were interviewed by CHP at the scene, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
