iPhone Glitter Cases Recalled After Reports of Chemical Burns

The main area of concern for this recall originates from the liquid stored inside the case which may leak, causing consumers to potentially suffer traumatic injuries.
Recall Details
On August 1, 2017, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of over 270,000 glittery cases for iPhone due to a potential safety hazard. About 263,000 of these cases were sold in the United States in addition to the 11,400 units sold in Canada and 400 in Mexico. The recall was created due to a defect in the structural design of the phone case, which may allow glitter and liquid to leak out of the case. A consumer may suffer a chemical burn or skin irritation in the event of substances leaking from the defective glittery phone case.
Recall Incident Reports
There has been approximately 24 reports filed worldwide pertaining to chemical burns and skin irritation from the use of these defective products. Of these 24 reports, 19 occurred in the United States. One report indicated that a consumer suffered permanent scarring as a result of the chemical burn. A separate consumer reported that they suffered swelling to their face, chest, neck, upper body, hands and leg due to the chemical burn.
Which Products are Affected by the Recall?
The recall includes all glittery cases for iPhone 7, 6s and 6 distributed by MixBin Electronics LLC. Consumers are advised to avoid to the following list of retailers that have sold the defective products:
- Amazon
- Henri Bendel
- MixBin Nordstrom Rack
- Tory Burch
- Victoria’s Secret

Recall Remedy
The CPSC advises that all consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cases for their iPhones. Consumers of these defective phone cases are entitled to a full refund by MixBin Electronics and may contact their customer service line at (855) 215-4935.
Burn Injury Report Involving Glittery Phone Case
A burn injury was reported earlier this year regarding the use of a glittery phone case by a young girl. A 9-year-old girl from Ware, Hertfordshire, was sleeping in her bed with her iPhone 5c secured in a pink glittery phone case. During her sleep, the liquid from her phone case leaked on her body. The young girl woke up in the middle of the night to advise her mother of her leg pain. The mother did not suspect anything serious so she sent her daughter back to bed. A burn wound was found on the daughter’s leg the following morning. The mother was shocked that the burn injury was caused by a phone case. Upon medical examination, the child appeared to have suffered a serious chemical burn. The medical provider of the girl stated that the injury may possibly leave a scar for life.
