Train Kills Davis Pedestrian

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Train Accident Lawyer. A woman was fatally struck by a freight train in Davis on Friday, December 15, 2017. This tragic incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. near the Mace Boulevard overpass at I-80.

Fatal Injuries

The pedestrian involved in this collision received fatal injuries in the accident. When a train hits a car or other vehicle, the results are often catastrophic. Train accidents involving pedestrians can leave the person with significant injuries such as extremity trauma, bone fractures, limb losstraumatic brain injuries, or even death.

Investigation

The identity of the woman killed in this morning’s train versus pedestrian accident has not been released pending the Yolo County Coroner’s investigation. The woman is believed to have been a transient, and reportedly was attempting to cross the tracks at the time of her death. Until officials are able to determine that there was no foul play involved, the accident scene has remained closed as evidence is collected and documented.

Train Traffic Comes to a Halt

All train traffic along the line has been stalled as officials work to document the scene. The Capitol Corridor service, popular with commuters from Sacramento through the Bay Area, is also reporting initial delays as a result of the early morning accident.

Speed Limits & New Trains

Capitol Corridor trains are currently limited to a top speed of 79 MPH under federal regulations for railroad safety. In October, the Capitol Corridor line put a new “Charger” model locomotive into service, utilizing a hybrid electric diesel engine and capable of 125 MPH transit. California will however need to wait before high speed train travel becomes a reality, as significant and costly upgrades will need to be made to the state’s aging infrastructure to ensure the public’s safety.
