Florinda Way Accident Injures Pedestrian

A pedestrian injury was reported in South Sacramento on June 10 after a vehicle struck a walker in a residential area. Around 9:19 in the morning, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was notified of a pedestrian/motor vehicle accident on Florinda Way between Loucretta Drive and 68th Avenue. The reporting person said they would transport the injured party to a hospital after they met with officers.

Authorities Investigating Cause of Pedestrian Injury

The CHP will be conducting an investigation into the pedestrian injury accident to find out how it happened. No data was provided on whether the driver of the motor vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene to speak with officers and exchange information.

Common Causes of a Pedestrian Injury Accident

Although many pedestrian injuries occur when crossing the street at an intersection, these accidents can happen in many other places. Non-intersections in urban areas are where many pedestrian injury accidents happen, such as:

  • Driveways: A pedestrian injury often occurs when a motorist backs out of a driveway. Although many newer vehicles are equipped with a backup camera, the driver has to pay attention that no one on foot is crossing behind them when they start to back out. Accidents of this type often involve small children because they cannot be seen through the rear-view mirror. It is the driver’s responsibility to check on where small children in the immediate area are before backing out.
  • Parking lots and streets: A driver backing out of a parking space at the shopping center should yield to any pedestrian crossing behind them. When parked on the street, they must ensure the way is clear before pulling out.
  • Refusing to yield: Pedestrians should be given the right of way where motor vehicles are involved, if possible. Unfortunately, some pedestrians commit dangerous actions like running across a freeway. In these instances, the driver may not see the walker until too late.
  • Road construction areas: In areas where road construction is ongoing, it may be impossible for pedestrians to stay on the sidewalk, so they have to walk in the street. Motorists should be cautious in these instances to avoid a pedestrian injury accident.
  • Arterial roads: When driving on arterial roads, motorists often have to contend not only with other drivers but with lane changes, tailgating, and other behaviors. They are still responsible for looking out for people on foot to avoid a pedestrian injury collision.

Recovery of Damages Following a Pedestrian Injury

Because a pedestrian accident often causes serious injuries, medical bills can pile up, and the injured party may face an extended period when they cannot work. These expenses can be recovered from the at-fault driver with the help of a personal injury attorney and recovery of damages for pain and suffering.
