Pittsburg Reckless Driving Complaints Increase

Reckless Driving Complaints Increase, According to Pittsburg PD

The Pittsburg Police Department has shifted gears in their community outreach efforts – they have started to showcase bad driver habits from Pittsburg residents ever since their noticeable increase of reckless driving complaints. Officials from Pittsburg PD have been posting videos of reckless driving and photos of speeding tickets, and even showing impounded cars as a result of poor driver behavior.

One video shows a car speeding through the city of Pittsburg, all while running multiple red lights. Another video showed a car that ran a red light, which subsequently caused a traffic collision. An officer can be seen in one picture clocking a driver at 94 mph on city roads (with expired tags). Another driver was recorded as they crashed into an apartment complex.

Reckless Driving Complaints: Statistics from Pittsburg PD

This recent move to utilize social media to act against reckless driving went into effect after the last city council meeting, where several community members voiced their concerns of the matter. Brian Addington, Pittsburg Police Chief, has explained that computer data has shown reckless driving complaints over the last two months have doubled. The data listed below was provided in a statement by Chief Addington upon request:

  • Reckless driving complaints from April and May 2020 have increased by 37 percent as compared to the same two-month period in 2019.
  • Almost three-fourths (70 percent) of complaints have surfaced on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. However, in the last 60 days there has been a substantial increase of complaints on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
  • There has been a 333 percent increase in complaints filed from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
  • Reports of stolen vehicles increased by 48 percent in April and by 270 percent in May, compared to April and May of 2019.
  • Police have arrested or sought complaints for 9 people alleged to have committed reckless driving in the last 60 days.

The increased use of social media to spread awareness and showcase their enforcement efforts has been in response to the increasing number of complaints filed, according to Chief Addington. Additionally, they are also working with traffic engineers to find long-term solutions for traffic control. They are also continuing to rely on the public to report any reckless driving by dialing 911 or (925) 646-2441.
