Celebrate Safely on New Year’s Eve

Most of Northern California remains under a stay-at-home order due to COVID-19.  Citizens are advised not to gather with people from outside their own household.  If you are unable to follow this advice and intend to celebrate safely with a small group, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued some suggestions for preventing the spread of COVID-19.

  • Wear a mask with at least two layers.  This can protect others as well as yourself.
  • The mask should be worn over your mouth and nose, secured under the chin, and fit snugly against the face.
  • Carry a spare mask in case the first becomes damp from breathing or precipitation.
  • Maintain a space of at least six feet between people who do not live with you.
  • Celebrate outdoors, if possible.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces regularly.
  • Avoid large crowds and indoor areas with poor ventilation.
  • If you are indoors, open windows and doors to create a cross-flow of air.  Turn on a window fan to pull fresh air in through the open window and blow indoor air out.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often, and dry them completely with a clean towel.
  • In the alternative, if hand washing isn’t available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
  • Do not shout or sing, both of which can easily spread the virus.
  • Avoid touching your nose, eyes, mouth, and mask.
  • If you have any cold or flu-like symptoms, stay home.

Staying Home is Safest

It is perfectly fine to make the decision that this year you will not partake in a New Year’s gathering.  Many throughout the country are making the same prudent decision.  Fortunately, there are many other options to celebrate safely from the comfort of your own home.

  • Host a virtual celebration with friends and loved ones that includes a countdown to midnight.
  • Watch a virtual performance or concert.
  • Have a New Year’s party with the people you live with – make it special by decorating, cooking favorite foods, and playing music.
  • Make it a pajama party – play games or watch your favorite movies as you count down to midnight.
  • Reach out to and check in on friends, family, and neighbors via phone, text, or Zoom.
  • Suggest a neighborhood countdown – your immediate neighbors will come out of their houses and cheer or light candles and sparklers at midnight.
  • Watch a Livestream firework display, or other virtual New Year’s event, which are happening all over the country.
  • Order a special meal for pick-up from a local restaurant.
  • Plan an outdoor activity for January 1st with your housemates – go sledding or for a hike.
  • Make a list of New Year’s resolutions. Set your intentions for 2021 and look forward to regaining freedom as the vaccine becomes more widespread and hospital capacities return to normal.

May this be a happy new year for all.  Goodbye 2020 and welcome, 2021!
