National Pepperoni Pizza Day is This Weekend

This Sunday is Pepperoni Pizza Day

Sunday, September 20, 2020, is National Pepperoni Pizza Day.  The day conveniently coincides with the second weekend of televised NFL games, so a perfect combination (no pizza pun intended) exists to deliciously celebrate the day.

A Very Brief History of Pizza

Legend tells us that Raffaele Esposito created the first pizza in 1889 to honor the queen of Italy at the time, Margherita of Savoy.  Looking to her as inspiration, Esposito created a pizza topped with mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil.  The white, red, and green toppings were used to represent the colors of the Italian flag.  To this day, that combination of toppings on a pie is called a Margherita pizza.

Pepperoni – Top of the Toppings

There are many toppings to choose from, but pepperoni remains the number one topping choice across the United States.  It is a featured topping on over one-third of all American pizza orders.  Pepperoni was created by Italian-American sausage makers, using a mixture of pork and beef.  It is seasoned with paprika, then smoked and cured.  Pepperoni is bright red in color, soft, with a slightly smoky flavor.

Other Pizza Facts

  • More than 1 million people in the U.S. are employed at pizza restaurants.
  • Approximately 13 million pizzas are sold each year on Super Bowl Sunday, which, according to Domino’s, is about a 40% bump in sales when compared to a regular Sunday.
  • On an average day in the United States, close to 15% of Americans eat pizza. On an average day, 25% of boys between the ages of 6 and 19 eat pizza.
  • Young people are more likely to enjoy pizza on a typical day than older folks, and males are more likely than females to eat a slice.

Observing National Pepperoni Pizza Day

Sacramento is not lacking in great pizza restaurants, so why not plan to take a break from cooking this Sunday and order a gooey, spicy pie from one of our favorite spots?  Then take a photograph of your pie to post on social media using the hashtag #PepperoniPizzaDay.

  • Roma II Pizzeria, 8491 Folsom Boulevard, Sacramento.  Roma’s is consistently toward the top of lists of the best pizzas in Sacramento.  This is the place to order from if you enjoy a thick, chewy crust and lots of stretchy mozzarella cheese.  They are open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Zelda’s Gourmet Pizza, 1415 21st Street, Sacramento.  A Sacramento staple for more than 40 years, Zelda’s serves deep dish, Chicago style pizzas.  They are currently open for take-out only from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Pizza Supreme Being, 1425 14th Street, Suite C, Sacramento, CA.  This recommendation comes with a caveat – you will have to celebrate National Pepperoni Day on a day other than September 20, 2020, as this business is closed on Sundays.  But this pizzeria is another that consistently hits the top spot for best in town.  They serve slices and squares, and instead of offering every topping under the sun, they specialize: their regular offerings are limited to cheese, pepperoni, Hawaiian, and a vegan pie.

If you are not disturbed by sausage making, watch the YouTube video on how pepperoni is made.
