Minor Injuries Reported in Accident on U.S. 50 Eastbound

An injury was reported on September 17 in Sacramento in a multiple-vehicle crash on eastbound U.S. 50. The accident happened just before 8:00 a.m. west of the 15th Street off-ramp blocking the fast lane. It involved a Ford Fusion, Toyota SUV and Chevy Cruz, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Sacramento Fire Department first responders were called to the scene where it was determined that at least one person had suffered minor injuries. The cause of the multiple-vehicle crash is being investigated by authorities.

Driver Error as a Cause of a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

Driver error is the reason for most traffic collisions. The problem is that on highways, the speeds are much higher than on surface streets, and because of congestion, it’s more difficult for drivers to avoid becoming involved in an accident. Some of the reasons a multiple-vehicle crash occurs include:

  • A vehicle has its taillights off, which prevents the driver behind them from spotting it when they slow down when they hit their brakes.
  • A driver is speeding, which makes them lose control of their car, leading to a multiple-vehicle crash.
  • Another motorist is distracted by texting, looking at a billboard, talking on a cell phone or for other reasons. This momentary distraction is enough for them to cause a multiple-vehicle crash.
  • A drunk driver is on the road, weaving in and out of their lane, changing speeds and tailgating. This is a common cause of a multiple-vehicle crash.
  • A motorist who stayed up too late the night before, has sleep apnea, or works swing shift is too fatigued to be behind the wheel of a car. Because fatigued drivers are comparable to those who are inebriated, them being behind the wheel of a car can lead to a multiple-vehicle crash.
  • Failure to yield can be a cause of a multiple-vehicle crash.

Other Problems Can Cause an Accident Involving Multiple Vehicles

In addition to driver error, other problems can cause a multiple-vehicle crash, such as:

  • Auto defects: When the vehicle’s brakes, tires, accelerator, motor or other auto parts are defective, it can cause an accident that involves multiple vehicles. The manufacturer may be held liable for any accident injuries or fatalities by filing an auto product liability claim.
  • Government neglect: All roads and streets are under the jurisdiction of a government entity, whether it is the city, county, state or federal. In some cases, the entity has been negligent in maintaining that roadway. Potholes, upheavals in the pavement, missing or misplaced signage, poor design, overgrown foliage, and other problems can lead to a multiple-vehicle crash. The government entity in charge can be held responsible for accident injuries and fatalities. However, the timeline for filing against a government entity is much shorter than for other personal injury claims.

Help Following a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

A personal injury lawyer can help an injured party following a crash involving multiple vehicles. They do this by investigating the accident to determine which motorists or outside entities were at fault and collecting the evidence to support the client’s claim. By doing this, the client can recover all of their medical expenses, wages lost because they couldn’t work, and damages for the pain and suffering they endured.
