Collision on Winding Way Causes Major Injury in Motorcycle Accident

A motorcycle accident with a pickup in Carmichael on November 3 caused a major injury to the rider. The accident occurred around 5:34 p.m along Winding Way between Hackberry Lane and Manzanita Avenue. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the collision occurred between a motorcycle rider and the driver of an Isuzu box pickup truck.

Motorcycle Accident With Motor Vehicle Being Investigated

Medics with the Sacramento Fire Department were called to the scene to assess injuries, where they discovered the motorcycle rider with a serious injury. That patient was then transported to a hospital for treatment. The collision is being investigated by authorities to determine fault and how it occurred.

How a Motorcycle Accident Happens When Another Vehicle Is Involved

Motorcycle riders realize that if they are involved in a collision with a motor vehicle, they face the risk of suffering serious injuries. However, one problem is that drivers of passenger vehicles watch for other motorists and not for motorcyclists, pedestrians, or bicycle riders. It is this type of negligence that often results in a serious collision. Some of the most common reasons for a motorcycle accident with a motorist include:

  • Turning in front of a motorcycle rider: This is the most common reason that the driver of a passenger vehicle or light truck causes a motorcycle accident. In some cases, when the driver is turning left, he/she thinks they can beat the motorcyclist across the street before the rider reaches them. When turning right, the driver often misjudges the speed and distance of the approaching motorcycle.
  • Blind spots: When a motorist is playing music loudly in their vehicle and ignores their blind spots when changing lanes, they can miss seeing or hearing a rider coming up on the side.
  • Distracted driving: Distracted driving has become a major cause of all types of collisions, including accidents with motorcycles. The driver who is talking on their cell phone, texting, looking at their GPS, and other actions isn’t paying attention to the surrounding traffic, which can lead to a motorcycle accident.
  • Drunk drivers: Because drunk drivers have slowed reflexes, exhibit poor judgment, and cannot judge their distance from other vehicles, accidents are common.
  • Speeding: Drivers who are speeding may not be able to stop in time to avoid a motorcycle accident if they don’t spot the rider in time.

Common Injuries in a Motorcycle Crash

Motorcycle riders often suffer serious injuries in a collision, which can end up with them being hospitalized and facing a long period of recuperation. Some of the most common injuries suffered by a rider include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries: Even though a motorcyclist is wearing a helmet at the time of a collision, head and brain injuries can still occur in some instances.
  • Broken bones: Bone fractures are common in a motorcycle accident, especially if the rider is ejected or contacts directly with the vehicle. The rider’s extremities, including hands and feet as well as the back, can lay a rider up for a long time. In some cases, when the injury is severe, it can result in permanent disability.
  • Spinal cord trauma: One of the most serious injuries that can occur in a motorcycle accident, spinal cord trauma can cause permanent or temporary paralysis.
