Folsom to Open Johnny Cash Trail

I’m Ed Smith, a Folsom personal injury lawyer. The city of Folsom is planning an all-day celebration in order to commemorate the opening of the city’s new Johnny Cash Art Trail. The event will be held on October 14, 2017, and will celebrate the 2.5-mile-long trail that was built in honor of the famous country musician and his impact on Folsom.

The Trail

The second phase of the trail includes a 1.25 mile stretch of Class 1 paving, tunnels for undercrossing and Natoma Street at Prison Road, and a 190-foot long wooden arch bridge that provides views of Lake Natoma and the American River Canyon.

Robert Goss, the director of Folsom’s Department of Parks and Recreation, spoke to interviewers about the trail. Goss noted that January 13, 2018, will mark 50 years since Johnny Cash gave his historic performance at Folsom Prison. Goss said that the album written after Cash’s prison performances, Folsom Prison Blues, is the reason that Folsom city is known world-wide. Gross added that when a city makes a 7.5 million investment in public infrastructure, it calls for a celebration.

Location

The new trail is actually an expansion of a trail that was opened to the public in 2014. The new section of the trail will connect the first portion, which ends in Sharon and Digger Williams Rodeo Park, to Folsom’s Historic District, where cyclists and pedestrians will have access to the beautiful heart of Folsom and the extensive length of the American River Parkway trail.

Remembering Cash

Cash made Folsom a famous city when he performed at the city’s prison in 1968. Cash’s passion for advocacy on the subject of prisoner’s rights led him to give many performances at prisons all around the United States. Contrary to what many have suggested, Cash never served a sentence in Folsom Prison, nor any prison at all. Over the course of his life, Cash used his influence and earnings to support prison reforms and believed in the power of rehabilitation and redemption for inmates.

Festivities

The festivities planned for the opening of the trail include a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a 6.2 and 4.2 mile timed run, an outdoor festival located in Folsom’s City Lions Park, and a community bike ride that begins on the trail itself. In the evening, the new bridge will be the location of an “Out Among the Stars” dinner that will feature a menu designed by Michelin star holding chef Duncan Holmes as well as desserts from local Karen’s Bakery Cafe.

Goss said that he looks forward to the various events occurring during the day of festivities, but that he is most proud of the fact that the new infrastructure makes some of Folsom’s most beautiful areas available to the public, noting that many people haven’t seen the territory that the new trail will make accessible. Goss told reporters that “the public doesn’t know what they’re in for.”
