Five Killed in Fresno County Truck Accident

Five parties were killed in a fatal truck accident on Interstate 5 in Fresno County on the night of Wednesday, January 6, 2021. The trucking collision occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. on northbound I-5 near Firebaugh, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported. A pickup truck reportedly veered over from the northbound side to the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. The pickup reportedly collided head-on with a tractor-trailer transporting cardboard. The impact caused both the big rig and the pickup to catch fire, causing damage to the roadway.

Sadly, five people from Sonoma Valley were killed in the Fresno truck accident. The decedents include a pregnant woman, her three children, and her mother-in-law, CHP traffic officials reported. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office has recently identified the decedents as a 1-year-old boy, 8-year-old boy, 10-year-old girl, 32-year-old Idalia Perez, and 52-year-old Martha Colin, all residents of Sonoma. A GoFundMe page has been created on behalf of the Colin family

Losing a Loved One in a Fatal Accident

When a loved one is lost in a fatal motor vehicle accident, the immediate family of the decedent may have many unanswered questions surrounding their loss. If negligence or recklessness is involved, then it becomes more than a tragic accident. There may be financial and emotional losses connected with the loss of a loved one. Covering final resting expenses and other losses can be overwhelming, especially when coping with grief and loss. This is where a Fresno wrongful death claim may come in and why state laws are set to sympathize with surviving family members and their sudden loss of their loved one due to negligent or careless actions. For more details on these types of cases and how a Fresno wrongful death attorney can help, watch the video below.

What Can Be Recovered in a Wrongful Death Truck Accident Case in Fresno County?

No amount of money can ever undo the pain that comes with the loss of a loved one. However, this should not discourage surviving family members from considering legal action against those responsible for their loss. A wrongful death claim is not only designed to compensate for financial losses but also the intangible aspects that come with the absence of a close relative. Wrongful death lawsuits may include financial compensation for:

  • Medical expenses related to the fatal truck accident in Fresno County
  • Funeral and burial expenses for a lost loved one
  • Loss of a close relative’s care, protection, and companionship
  • Lost inheritance, future earnings, and benefits for survivors

Other types of recovery may be claimed depending on the facts and circumstances of the wrongful death car accident case, such as punitive damages to hold the at-fault party financially accountable for their egregious conduct. What every wrongful death case has in common is the need for experience, skills, and resources against difficult insurance companies and defense counsel. Often, cases brought against negligent truck drivers and trucking companies have considerable legal resources to dispute the value of a wrongful death claim.
